As the definition of continents is arbitrary and not related to the actual underlying tectonic plates anyway, Europeans invented it so we get to define what a proper continent is or not.

In fact a number of Latin American countries count six continents by combining North and South America but counting Europe and Asia as separate continents.

I see from Wikipedia that Japan, Russia and some Eastern European countries count six continents with Eurasia as one continent but North and South America as separate continents.
