Kurz held his announcement.

He says he entered the arena to change the country after years of standstill. He says in terms of collaborating on political goals the past years were good with the FPÖ. However, he said that the price of that were constant distractions by the FPÖ's little and small scandals and now enough is enough. He said that with the FPÖ he can't work, that the social democrats don't share the same goals, and that the other parties are too small, so he's asked the president for setting new elections.

He was in campaign mode, hyping his agenda and successes and asking for support.

I think he has a good chance of repeating what Schüssel in 2002 when he ended the coalition with the FPÖ to call new elections and came out much stronger. FPÖ will bleed a lot of votes, and most of them will go to the ÖVP and non-voters.

President and Chancellor met today. Afterwards they held a quick press briefing, saying elections would likely be held early September, that there's no trust in some members of government at the moment, and that full investigation of all possible wrongdoing is required. President and Chancellor will meet all party heads in the next days.

They did, however, say that maximum stability is required till the elections. What happens with the FPÖ ministers, especially the controversial interior minister, has not been said.

All press "conferences" of yesterday and today by Strache, Chancellor, and President had one thing in common: "No questions permitted." <_<

Meanwhile, Strache has apparently said via WhatsApp to party friends that he considers staying on as leader of the FPÖ in Vienna. :bleeding: The federal FPÖ will meet today at 4 pm.

The drama continues. Currently there's a stand off between Chancellor Kurz's ÖVP and Strache's FPÖ.

Kurz and the President want to get rid of the FPÖ minister of interior. Kurz says since there'll be investigations into the FPÖ from the time the minister was general secretary, he can't stay in this role.

FPÖ says if he's forced out all their ministers will resign (good riddance, I say!), and they might support a vote of no confidence in parliament if another party tables one (which has already happened).

The Social Democrats have called for an emergency session of Parliament for Wednesday. ÖVP says they want one "at earliest" on Monday, after the EU elections here.

The chancellor himself is almost invisible. He made three press statements which were mostly, "Can't continue with FPÖ, poor me wanted to make things work, but alas! Also, gimme your vote if you like what I did so far. Only I can save Austria now!" During his three appearances in front of press since Saturday, no questions from reporters were permitted. He did give two or three interviews to friendly papers who asked softball questions.

The FPÖ currently has two faces: Norbert Hofer who took over leadership and who is basically saying everything that the public wants to hear now ("Very bad, we'll investigate everything, no room for anti-democratic, corrupt, or extremist views in the party, etc.") and minister of interior Kickl who keeps attacking the ÖVP.

Footnote: Gudenus who was in the video with Strache met with the decoys after the video was made. He pushed a press release at their request which attacked the owner of construction company Strabag. Gudenus has now resigned not only from his posts, but also from the party entire.

Footnote 2: German satirist Jan Böhmermann, who knew about the video over a month before German papers received it, as put up a website http://www.dotheyknowitseurope.eu/ which counts down till Wednesday, 8:15 pm local time. In the webcode you find the word "ibiza".

So, Kickl got fired, all FPÖ ministers resign from government. Interim ministers will be chosen from ministry staff and "experts". FPÖ doesn't rule out no confidence motion against Kurz.

No room for their primary constituency?

Kickl covers that very well - he's one of the chief ideologists of the party. During is time as IM he wanted to "concentrate asylum seekers in camps", said, "the human rights conventions prevent us from doing our job," and "law must follow politics, not the other way around." He's also proud of his accomplishment of reducing payments to asylum seekers significantly (1.50 extra per day, if they perform work).

I was just thinking about Russian meddling this morning.
Its weird. Back in the days of the Cold War the soviets were also meddling in western affairs.... but this wasn't all that bad. They largely supported left wing groups which...in the west at least (less so in the developing world) largely behaved themselves and concentrated on pushing for good things like workers rights et al. They left the Stalinism at home and just exported the positive face of socialism.
Now however, they just want to see the world burn. They support groups that propose nothing but self destruction.
And they're having far far more success today than they ever did in Soviet times.

In 2014 someone made a Vienna version of the House of Cards intro. Feels rather appropriate now:

The 3 beer is a reference to an old photo where Strache said he wasn't doing a salute popular among neonazis, but was ordering 3 beer.

Checks out. That was the thing the British guy in Inglorious Basterds forgot to do that got him in trouble.

Putin has the paleo-left (anti-west/US ) for him cf. Maduro supporters such as Mélenchon in France, more pro-Putin than Le Pen, and adding some anti-Balt speech. His famous Lithuanian SS division he invented to slander them was perfectly in line with the Kremlin's propaganda. Putin hedges his bets, that's all.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)
