You're from WV right?  Is your hometown a victim of industrial decline and opioid abuse?
IIRC he might be from Huntington, WV?  If so yes, I've been there and it's one of the biggest shit holes I've ever seen (sorry spiess  )

~23.5 miles. I might go back in retirement, but very low chance of it before then.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

Roughly a thousand miles by car, it'd seem.

4,265 miles apparently.

I used to be even further away when I lived in San Francisco.

My hometown is Cambridge, in the UK. A lovely place. I last lived there in about 1993 I think.

I live in the same block as I did when I was a teen, about 5 minute walk from where I lived as a little kid.

From my old hometown - 795 km (494 miles) as the crow flies, 1,027 km (638 miles) by car.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Correct.  It is an absolute shithole.  Sadly, I can remember when it was still something of a decent small town.  It was already in decline in the 70s/80s, but still had some things going for it and was a good place to grow up.  Now it's just a dirty old river town in decay.

It's 4,455.39 miles for me.

And yet it's still not far enough.  The fuckers followed you here.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
