I used to be even further away when I lived in San Francisco.

My hometown is Cambridge, in the UK. A lovely place. I last lived there in about 1993 I think.

Correct.  It is an absolute shithole.  Sadly, I can remember when it was still something of a decent small town.  It was already in decline in the 70s/80s, but still had some things going for it and was a good place to grow up.  Now it's just a dirty old river town in decay.
