In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

With all the generals that have received knighthoods, and the occasional other person (I recall some US service member being honored after stopping a knife attack on a French train), I presumed there is some US law that is pretty much amount to a necessary blanket Congressional approval for monetarily worthless honorifics.

It is more of an issue of whether their loyalty is now divided in some way.  The examples you gave would not put loyalty in question.  For example, the generals in question were given the awards because of the way they discharged their office and obligations to their own nation.

Likewise the people honoured for stopping a knife attack would put their loyalty to the USA in question.

We have the same prohibition here - although not in our written constitution.  It is more of a constitutional norm that your nation codified.

The Minsky Moment

Quote from: Jacob on March 24, 2026, 11:03:27 AMSeems a good reason to impeach Alito

It's small potatoes compared to the bribery.

Quote from: The Minsky Moment on March 24, 2026, 10:13:16 AMIt's awarded by a literal Prince of a European Royal House.

The literal language of the provision is disjunctive: "king, prince, or foreign state"

In addition the control of the order and its succession was established by Papal Bull, thus implicating the Vatican, which is a sovereign foreign state.

If anything, I'd almost expect that there'd be backlash about this being a Papist honor, but then again you have a Catholic VP these days :P

And the US had a Catholic president until 15 months ago.

Replace day with 15 months.

He PLED GUILTY in a case brought under TRUMP's justice department.  They can't even blame Biden for this one.

It's absurd. Being the prevailing party is supposed to be a requirement to recovery.

You are expecting the MAGA crowd to remember that kind of detail, when they don't even remember that they voted for Trump because he promised not to start any wars.
