The Minsky Moment

So I for one to NOT buy into the notion that the USSC is just in the bag for Trump.  ACB and Roberts have certainly shown some independence.

But the USSC has shown a lot of deference to Presidential powers.  In order to strike down the Canadian tariffs the court would seriously read down the Presidents emergency powers, at least when it comes to trade.  I have my doubts that will happen.

In order to uphold them, they would have to rewrite a statute and upend the Youngstown Steel framework (which Coney Barett has explicitly embraced).  Not an impossibility for this Supreme Court, granted.

Musk Says DOGE Halting Treasury Payments to US Contractors

It isn't clear if he stopped payment to more than one contractor.

He did stopped payments to one Lutheran charity providing social services, one set up by Republicans during GW Bush mandate.

Anything else is muddy.  But he has control over the payments and is selective over whom receives treasury payments.

Ireland? That caught me off guard.
The German origin imports to Maryland and Rhode Island are cars. That will end once Trump puts significant tariffs on cars.

What's interesting about that map is some of the really high percentages.

Idaho was curious, but someone already explained.

Oklahoma 50% Canada - that's all oil.

Michigan 44% Mexico - auto industry.

Not sure how Canada hits 86% in Montana - surely they still buy lots of cheap Chinese crap like everyone else.  Unless if a lot of overseas imports are counted towards their port of entry, and not final destination?

So we are holding off on tariffs on Mexico because the Sheinbaum stroked his ego?  It's nice to know the Tariffs aren't actually about anything.  He just wants to hear sweet nothings.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Well that's a relief. The Texas economy survives another day.

Only 1,446 days to go.

I fear the US won't last as long as Ukraine in its fight against the autocrats.

So Mexico buys a 1-month reprieve for promising to send 10,000 troops to the US border.

Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre is insisting we should do the same.

I dunno - normally you'd think the US would be opposed to Canada massing troops on the border, but if it'll work...

(Though it his -32c last night.  I'd hate to be some poor CAF soldier stuck in Couts, Alberta in this kind of weather.  And heaven help anyone sent to Beaver Creek, Yukon - I know from experience there's like 3 hotel rooms in the entire town in winter)

this popped up in my feed. It has some funny alternative names for Drumphler. And he might be right too, at to some degree.

I don't get how Canada exports dairy to the US but a gallon of milk costs six times as much in Canada as it does in the US.

Surely you're heard the phrase "supply management" by now?

Producers of dairy and eggs are given production quotas.  They can only sell that much, and it guarantees them a certain price.  Great for producers, not so much for consumers.

That explains the high price in Canada.  It does not explain the exports to the US.
