I don't think it's about covering their ass, I think it's about preventing armed overthrow of the government.

I don't mean to alarm you, but I concur.

But what toys will he have left to play with in his pram?

For some reason the thought popped into my head that some posters were recently saying Republican senators do whatever Mitch tells them to.

It's probably at least a bit of both.  If they didn't block an objectively bad actor, that would likely strengthen the case for the repeal of section 230 even more than it already is which could end Twitter as a business.

Hi Jacob!

Yeah - apparently activity on Twitter and Parler is suggesting very real possibility of more violent action next week and at inauguration.

That was fucking awesome. Crowdsourcing Sherlock Holmes. Didn't take long either.

Hi Jacob!

Hi! You still in the US?

QuoteYeah - apparently activity on Twitter and Parler is suggesting very real possibility of more violent action next week and at inauguration.

Which will suck if it happens. I expect that there'll be a little more active law enforcement and security arrangements this time around, though.

Not to speak for Oex, but if i recall correctly he got fed up with Trumps America and moved back to that frozen wasteland of polite people.

Twitter has banned Trump from his account, @POTUS, and @TeamTrump. And this: https://twitter.com/JDiamond1/status/1347741119434649603

Twitter thinking they can censure a major world leader is pretty short sided. That is going to end very badly for them. I understand trying to protect yourself from liability but Twitter is a platform, not a publisher. They already have legal cover.

I'm fine with them banning world leaders who are actively inciting insurrection and violence. That's a precedent I can live with.

Yeah this line from Twitter is alarming: "Plans for future armed protests have already begun proliferating on and off-Twitter, including a proposed secondary attack on the US Capitol and state capitol buildings on January 17, 2021."

In terms of coup/counter-coup comparisons the President losing his access to media platforms seems like a pretty big step.

World leaders don't need twitter. It is already a travesty that they use it.

Yeah I don't get why the rules should be different for world leaders. As individual users you're not allowed to incite or threaten violence, or dox someone, or share revenge porn or all of these other terms of use. I don't see why it would be any different if you're a world leader.

So, Trump dusted off the official @POTUS account to rant and moan about his ban, and Twitter deleted it promptly. So it's now been published as an official communication of the presidency of the USA:

So like Trump to attack Section 230.  Line of reasoning: twitter and FB like 230, I want to hurt twitter and FB, therefore I will threaten 230.  No ability to think behind the simple infantile reflect to lash out at one's tormentor.

But if 230 goes, that means platforms face direct liability for the defamatory comments of every user.  4chan, parler, etc. will all go under. FB, twitter, etc. could only survive by strictly enforcing restrictive TOS and purging anyone who creates issues.  In a world without 230, Trump would have never been allowed near social media.
