Two administration officials said that Trump is preparing to depart for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center around 5:30 p.m. Friday. The visit is "out of an abundance of caution," an official said, adding that the president may remain there for several days.

The president's condition worsened Friday, officials said, though they maintained he remained "in good spirits." The president is struggling with a low-grade fever, a cough and nasal congestion, among other symptoms, said two people familiar with his condition.

Aides began planning the trip to Walter Reed midafternoon, officials said.

Trump spent Friday working and making calls from his residence and plans to continue working from the hospital, an official said. Walter Reed has an executive office suite set up for this purpose, including a residence and an office space, the official said. The official stressed that Trump is not seriously ill but that because of his age, as well as other risk factors, he and aides decided to take this additional step.

He was expected to travel there on Marine One and to walk out to the helicopter on his own.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany shared an update from the president's doctor in tweet earlier Friday afternoon.

"As of this afternoon the President remains fatigued but in good spirits," White House physician Sean P. Conley wrote in a memo. "He's being evaluated by a team of experts and together we'll be making recommendations to the President and First Lady in regards to next best steps."
