Discussing this elsewhere, but is there any historical precedent for this level of "Glorious Leader" cult like devotion to a candidate that we're seeing with Trump anywhere else in American history? The closest I could think of would be Washington, and maybe Jackson or FDR.

Closest I can think of is Joe McCarthy.  There is a similar dynamic in play.  McCarthy was loved by the American right because of his cruelty and hysterics.  They were thrilled to finally have someone mercilessly attack all those leftist New Dealers that the right had resented for two decades.  They also were aware, like they are aware of Trump, that the man was full of shit.  Because he was obviously full of shit the American right could not stand McCarthy being attacked and were rabid in defending him.  The defensive attitude was necessary to keep away the cognitive dissonance.  I think that the cult of personality around Trump, at least in part, is to silence that uncomfortable voice in the back of a Right-wingers minds reminding them that Trump is a corrupt racist.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

President Donald Trump signed a memo on Wednesday that threatens to cut federal funding to "lawless" cities, including Seattle, Portland, New York and Washington.

"My Administration will not allow Federal tax dollars to fund cities that allow themselves to deteriorate into lawless zones," said the memo, which was released by the White House.

The memo instructs Attorney General William Barr to develop a list of "anarchist jurisdictions" that "permitted violence and the destruction of property to persist and have refused to undertake reasonable measures" to restore order.

The memo also instructs White House budget director Russell Vought to issue guidance in 30 days "to the heads of agencies on restricting eligibility of or otherwise disfavoring, to the maximum extent permitted by law, anarchist jurisdictions in the receipt of federal grants."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Twitter that Trump was trying to cut off funding that states and cities must receive to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

"He is not a king. He cannot 'defund' NYC," Cuomo said. "It's an illegal stunt."

Cut federal funding to Washington? That is inside the Federal district

He threatens that all the time.

I find it more worrying that he tells supporters in North Carolina that they should vote once per mail, but also in person to be sure their vote is counted. Which appears to be illegal.

You know the oldest and hoariest joke in politics is for a candidate to tell their supporters to "vote early and vote often".

Just because a joke is old doesn't mean it's not harmful.

Weird map, as those big white areas certainly have electricity transmission agencies of their own.

This is an issue that's come up in Canada from time to time.  Provinces with significant hydro power have transmission lines running south to the US, but there is no east-to-west transmission between provinces.  I think it was in the Conservative election platform from the last election to have a national utilities corridor.

BC had a deal with Alberta under the Alberta NDP to build hydro lines to supply hydro power so that Alberta could start shutting down its fossil fuel power generators.  I think that went up when the Alberta Conservatives were elected with their all oil all the time platform.  No sense in supplying hydro if Alberta is going to keep its current facilities online.

Notely suspended under the all oil all the time pressure and the current government killed it because all oil all the time.

From your link:

QuoteEarlier this year, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley suspended talks[/u] on electricity trade as a result of the B.C. government's efforts to block expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. United Conservative Party opposition leader Jason Kenney has pushed Notley to be even more aggressive in punishing B.C. for its government's actions that are seen to damage Alberta's economy by denying export markets for its crude.

Talks.  There was no deal.

Personally, I'm okay with buying hydro from BC.  Though I think we should also buy it from Manitoba, which is doing a huge expansion without a guaranteed purchaser, so we could probably get it for cheaper.

I said Notely suspended....All oil all the time works in Alberta but if the Conservatives want a shot at governing they are going to have to speak to the rest of us.

Actually, I have never seen any evidence that a candidate has ever actually said that to their supporters, even as a joke.

I'm 99% sure candidates I've worked for have used that one - clearly intended as a joke.

You've worked for some pretty foolish candidates, then.  Wise ones do not advocate corrupt lawbreaking, even as a joke, when under the kind of scrutiny a candidate gets.  Comedians can use that line, though, and have.
