And black people, by the same token. Because, in a lot of American cities, when you say "low income housing", white people definitely hear "black people".

And it is certainly not because only black people are poor, it is just a code word.

But the idea the Feds are going to go on a low income housing building spree is just idiotic.

In a beautiful suburb of Iowa? I assume he means a beautiful suburb in Iowa, but do beautiful suburbs actually exist anywhere, never mind in Iowa?

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

I mean there are plenty of shitty suburbs out there.

I think he is trying to scare suburban moms that their new fancy development is going to have loads of black people in it. Because that is how the Housing and Urban Development department works: they find the most expensive and over-priced land they can and then build on it.

It's certainly remarkable how many terrible assumptions he makes/implies in such a short space.

As Sheilbh remarked, he's not alone at all. These are frequent assumptions in a lot of real estate talk in the US.

It is a bit surprising that he's running on a segregation issue.  Trump has had some trouble with the FHA in the past, so I guess it's not that surprising.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I dunno.  But I grew up in a suburb, so I might be biased.  :P

One thing I noticed growing up though, is the suburb I lived in is one my parent's bought into not too long after it was built in the early-mid 1970's.  Just on the other side of the hill that suburb is placed on, is an expansion of the suburb built more in the mid-late 1990's.  The houses from the 70's, though maybe one or two having some similarities, all were very architecturally unique in design.  The homes from the area built up in the 1990's are practically identical.  The one I grew up in was definitely a much more attractive neighborhood.

Valmy

Building them close to identical enables them to keep costs down.

My main whine is that they all have such weird architectural features. I have no idea who designs suburban homes these days but they are just weird as fuck. With suburban homes from decades past you can go "ah that is a bungalow, ah that is a ranch-style house, ah that is a Georgian revival house" these days it is just "ah that is a....um....weird shaped thing with an odd roofline". And it is not even some kind of modernist experimental house it is some weird conglomeration of traditional styles.

I did the best I could to sort of echo the traditional looks of central Texas but I still have windows that don't match (for no reason at all that I can see) and a god-awful roofline that fortunately I have covered with solar panels.

I mean what the hell even is this:

But anyway it is all you have to choose from unless you are rich enough to actually buy an empty lot and hire an architect yourself.

I know, that's the problem.  Bucks before beauty.  :(

The leaks from the Supreme Court are fascinating. In this one it feels like Kavanaugh is intensely political in a way that the other conservative members aren't (for different reason):

One of the things I love about my neighbourhood is that the houses are all designed to be different - all in roughly the same style, but each unique.

This was a deliberate plan - the whole place was designed by an eccentric dude with the bizarrely appropriate name of "Robert Home Smith". Who names their kids with the middle name "Home"?

Anyway, in this new development, every house plan had to be personally approved by this one guy, who had a very definite vision of how the place should look. So they could not be cookie-cutter, but neither could they be totally different.

Painful video of Trump being pushed by interviewer about his knowledge of Russia supplying weapons/money to the Taliban, Russian bounties on US soldiers and whether he discussed it with Putin on his calls:

I've spent time in some lovely suburbs: St. Charles, IL, Princeton Heights, NJ, Potomac, MD, etc.

QuoteTrump says he is considering banning TikTok

In his typically vague-yet-ominous way, Donald Trump said his administration is "looking at" whether it might make a decision to shut down TikTok in the United States.

The social media app is owned by a Chinese firm – though allegedly run by an American CEO. US officials have raised concerns about the Chinese government tapping into private and personal data via Americans' cell phones via such smart phone applications.

The president called the actions of that and other big technology companies "very bad," but did not get into specifics. He has in the past accused them of censoring conservatives.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently issued a warning for Americans who use TikTok.

"With respect to Chinese apps on people's cell phones, I can assure you the United States will get this one right too, Laura," he said. "I don't want to get out in front of the President [Donald Trump], but it's something we're looking at."

Some GOP lawmakers also have been outspoken about TikTok.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley has pushed a bill that would ban federal employees from using the app on their government phones.

Instead of spamming you stream of consciousness (sorry), I typed you up this graf:

Congress is also wary of the Chinese-owned social media app.

An amendment from GOP Congressman Ken Buck banning federal employees from downloading the app on their government phones made it into the Democratic-controlled House's version of the annual defence spending bill that passed earlier this month.

A Senate Homeland Security subcommittee approved a twin bill in that chamber last week.

"TikTok is a major security risk to the United States, and it has no place on government devices," Mr Hawley said in March, when he introduced his bill.
