Valmy, do you think that maybe, just maybe, there's an alternate reading of Yi's post that doesn't think we need to raise taxes on goods to save the economy? Possibly? Just perhaps?
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

Doesn't sound all that crazy to me.

Really? You think we need to raise taxes on goods to save the economy?

I cannot count on right wingers for anything.

I suspect he was referring to the socio-economic costs of reduced manufacturing bit.

I believe I asked for clarification.

Meh. People were whining about the socio-economic costs of increasing manufacturing 100 years ago. I think people need work but it does not need to be monotonous, physically dangerous, and increasingly poorly paid factory labor.

The way you phrased it comes across as an absurd strawman. If you're asking for clarification, try less exasperated and accusatory and more inquisitive.

That some out of work factory workers have drinking problems & will abuse their spouse leading to a possible divorce.

The Minsky Moment

I'm not a huge fan of Navarro, but he's a real economist who has done real research and published real papers in real journals.  Not at the top end but not a faker either.

The essential premise - that negative social consequences like higher mortality or addiction rates may follow from a decline in stable employment opportunities  - is not that counter-intuitive, in fact it would be pretty surprising to find otherwise.

The document referred to in the article is clearly some kind of summary and thus one would not expect lots of data or detail.  That doesn't mean the data and detail doesn't exist.
The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

Actually I intended it to be a joke of course. Republicans wanting more taxes on good claiming they are going to solve all social ills is a weird situation. And here was Yi saying that made sense. But I was kidding. I thought the absurdity of it made that clear.

Are you suggesting that back in the height of the industrial revolution there was less drinking problems and less spousal abuse? Because I am pretty sure it is the opposite. But back then people were saying factory work is alienating and dehumanizing. Not sure what is so ennobling about it now.

But why does it have to to manufacturing? It would make sense to me to make jobs that will be useful in the future, not trying to artificially recreate the industrial economy of decades ago.

No, I don't but I don't know why what happened in 1800s is included in the discussion of the Post-OPEC embargo manufacturing decline.

I don't think they're saying factory work is ennobling, but that work is ennobling and the fleeing factory work isn't being replaced.

What they are saying it factory work is going away not because that is ancient technology of the past but because foreign nations are fucking us over. Which is idiotic.

Yes there is manufacturing work to be done but it is not the manufacturing work of decades ago. Raising taxes to make goods more expensive for the poor is not going to solve the problem. We are transitioning to a new economy, one that has the potential to be far better.
