the evidence is starting to pile up that people don't actually care about the things a lot of posters here think they should be caring about

  Okay.  Hope you feel better for getting that off your chest.

The size of the population being sampled has no bearing on the sampling error.
yes and no.
The confidence level and the margin of error you seek will determine the size of your sample.
To avoid sampling error, you seek a sample representative of your total population.  You don't necessarly get better results by surveying 100 000 people versus 5000, but if you sample size doesn't give you a good geographical and demographical representation of your population (say equal number of people from Mid West States and East coast would likely skew your survey results, or picking 90% males aged between 49 and 69 making 750 000$k and above in your sample).

Obviously, there's a point where the costs of a great sample outweighs the benefits given.  I just find odd that you could get a diverse sample with only 1000 people reached over the phone.  No mail, no internet, only one medium used.

Since I have no other details of this poll, I did not reject it, I simply stated that the error margin must be high.  A 5% error margin requires less people to respond than a 1% error margin.  That is a fact.

Donald Trump was the fastest president to get to net negative popularity in modern history.  It took him eight days.  Usually it takes months or years.

trolling aside, there does not seem to be that huge of a reaction coming from the US.  Democrats appeared opposed to the plan (I heard one governor's speech), but on the Republican side, the people who voted Trump, there is little to no outcry so far.  There are protests in the big cities, but there always are protests in the big cities.  If there were protests in Biloxi, in Bâton-Rouge or North&South Dakota, I might be inclined to believe there is widespread outrage, but so far, I don't see that.  I might have missed it, though, my attention was caught by closer-to-home events.

EDIT:
Strike that, there seems to be more opposition than I thought.

The same people who did the phony election polls, and were so wrong, are now doing approval rating polls. They are rigged just like before.

isn't trump also exceptional in that people largely viewed him as despicable yet he still won? for all we know, his popularity rating might have already hit the floor and has nowhere to go but up

Can't those things not be just flawed, do they have to be rigged and phony?

That's actually not true. Gallup doesn't do election prediction polls. :)

Love her.

Largely symbolic of course, but what a great contrast to the new AG who will be coming in...someone with principles and integrity!

No, but the composition of the sample does.

But then again, it probably pales in comparison with the wording of the question:

"Do you favor or oppose a temporary ban on refugees from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen until the federal government improves its ability to screen out potential terrorists from coming here?"

Given that wording, it's no surprise that a majority answered "yes".  Saying "no" would amount to saying, "I don't thing the government need to improve its ability to screen out potential terrorists from entering the country" to a lot of people.  It's a leading question, and the pollsters should be ashamed for wording it that way.
