For all intensive purposes both terms mean the same thing.

Don't be such a pre-Madonna.  It's a doggy-dog world.

The difference is subtle but real.  Thar's why there are two different words.

And you felt the need to mock someone when they used the term in a perfectly reasonable way.  Yeah, real subtle there Grumbles.

The Minsky Moment

Since Patrick O'Brian died I would just assume that grumbler is the world's foremost expert on rigging.

The Minsky Moment

Trump of course thinks he knows all about it
But he really doesn't

Learn something new every day.  I thought it should be jury-rigged, and jerry-rigged is wrong.  Turns out both are right.

:lmfao:  Who did I mock (besides you and DGuller, both for saying dumb stuff)?  I think that maybe you should consider whether subtlety is beyond your comprehension.

Something that is jury-rigged is improvised out of nominally unsuitable materials, and one is proud of their jury-rigging because it couldn't be done better. I jury-rigged a flashlight out of a battery, a light bulb, and two wires.

Something that is jerry-rigged is thrown together hastily and without a lot of thought (due to time constraints, laziness, or whatever).  One isn't necessarily proud of a jerry-rigged product because it could have been done better.  Literally paying for college would be cheaper than the jerry-rigged system we have now.

The difference is subtle, but present.

You went off on Tim, who it turns out wasn't even wrong in his use of jury-rigging.

I am sure you can quote the post where I "went off on Tim," and I am sure that you can demonstrate that "jury rigged" was more accurate as he used it than "jerry-rigged."

Best thread ever.

Especially given it was jerry-rigged.

You mean jury-rigged.

No, I meant to imply that the constituent materials were crap.

dps

Thanks.  I have always thought that something that is jury-rigged is unfair.

That's a jury rig.

If it turns out better than the materials would lead you to expect, it is jury-rigged.  If it turns out worse than the materials would lead you to expect, it is jerry-rigged.
