Kind of surprised they are turning themselves in. Maybe some of these people got caught up in the mob mentality and later regretted their actions? Or something else?

Surprised because it is the smart move and therefore unexpected of this mob?  I think that is again dangerously dismissing this group as a mere rabble.

Honestly, I expect 90% of the people there - including a good number inside the chambers - just got swept along in the moment without any clear goals or serious thought about the consequences. It doesn't mean they couldn't have spilled blood if the mob got their hands on those they considered enemies, but I expect most of the folks didn't go with more of an agenda than "show up, be heard and seen... something-something."

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but this is the current State Dept. bio for Trump:

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

Well I guess if he resigns at 7:40 pm we know this is true.

They also list Pence's term as ending today: https://www.state.gov/biographies/michael-r-pence/

It does sort of make sense. Self-pardoning is legally in doubt from what I understand. Getting a pardon from Pence is far more secure.

It looks like Pence's term ends today as well, judging by the website.

What this means, I have no idea.

How easy is it to repair the government site after vandalism?  I wonder if it would be simpler to just have Trump and Pence resign at the time specified instead.

Sadly, a "disgruntled staffer", which does seem a likely excuse.

Probably for the best - if they had actually resigned, I would assume it was for some bad motive.

My guess is that it was shamming the door while on the way out of it anyway.

There are times through the Trump Presidency where I find him, fundamentally, kind of hilarious:
