Damned if I know what a good outcome for the US in Syria looks like. Once the best intentions are filtered through the Pentagon/State Department bureaucracy the results tend to be rather far from what it says on the tin. Did the Romans have this problem? Syria was a dependable cash cow for them if I recall.

If Russia gets to inherit the ruins I have a hard time seeing that as a loss.
