Wasn't the movement started by women with even closer ties to Weinstein? :perv:

Where does it say Tarana Burke or Alyssa Milano were closely connected to Weinstein?

Fine, whatever, the movement owes its impetus to the Weinstein accusers even if they didn't come up with the hash tag.

Well that's one perspective. Seems a bit like a great men theory though as it wasn't a movement that spontaneously appeared from nothing nor solely because of Weinstein. He was more like the last straw.

Yeah, off the top of my mind there were the Cosby allegations very recently too (and probably others that I can't remember right now). Weinstein was the crack that finally broke the dam, but the pressure had been mounting for years.

The Minsky Moment

In a nutshell: internet + good logistics created a paradigm shift for retail once the credibility gap was bridged (and that's well past). Taking out the entity Amazon will not set back that clock.

There is another very big piece.  The shopping mall is a cultural as well as an economic phenomenon.  Malls thrive as destinations for people to go in itself, to see and be seen, to experience the spectacle of the mall itself.  The young people that flocked to malls in the 80s now use social media for the same purposes.
The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

Yep, snapchat replaced the need to go to the mall to see and be seen.

While that is true. My preteen & teen nieces & nephews still go regularly to the mall...to snapchat from there.

I feel so old but this "live" culture is dumb.

Good point.

The Minsky Moment

Another big factor in retail are the warehouse clubs.  It's another dimension of competition because it keeps both the live experience and the get-everything-in-one-place convenience.  The atmosphere is more spartan but I suspect the clubs have done even more damage to the lower-tier malls than ecommerce.

The Minsky Moment

Amazon naturally attracts attention because they are newish and aggressive.  Their business model seems to point to the future.  They have buzz.  They expand rapidly.

For a simple mind like Trump it's easy to seize on Amazon and say - there's the cause of why the malls are hurting.  If you are a cynical property owner/manager that wants to hamstring a virtual competitor, you will play to that narrative.  Amazon itself likes to tout its own disruptiveness and transformational character - it helps attract talent and stock analysts lap up the buzzwords in lieu of the profits.  But is IS a too simple story - there is more going on.
