Fromer Conservative minister who was fired for accidentally briefly collapsing the British poultry industry by saying "most of the egg production in this country, sadly, is now affected with salmonella", and had an affair with John Major.

Yet another exhibit of why British politics reminds me of the 90s.

I'll stick my neck out and predict one of her first policy announcements will be to cancel the 2nd cost of living payment to those receiving universal credit, probably won't touch the equivalent payment to those getting tax credits.

It'll fit in well with her mantra of not supporting hand out etc, besides the probably thinks many of those people won't vote for her anyway.

But you're falling into the same trap she likely will too, the majority on uni.credit are working.

All the reporting is that if not her fast act her first big announcement is going to be a freeze in energy bills for the next six months plus something for business - basically at a similar cost to furlough.

I think it's always been very unlikely to be anything else. The questions always been support for consumer or subsidising suppliers - ruling out "handouts" leads to that sort of market intervention.

This doesn't mean they suddenly gained a better level of awareness of the world. A lot of these lowest earners supported Johnson.

New political Sunday morning show launched yesterday and he was the comedian on the panel and very good

Cue enormous pearl clutching by centrist media types and the tabloids because it mocked (a) political talk shows and (b) Liz Truss.

The  thing is anyone doing a slot as a pundit would basically say "well, she hasn't said much and there's no clarity about her plan on energy" possibly quite angrily - and anyway he's sat next to a Labour MP who'll do that. I think what's really annoyed people is that he basically took the piss of the entire format. By pretending to be a Truss superfan (he whooped at the end of her interview too) it basically forced the host to either go along, or call his bluff which would mean admitting that it's absurd that anyone would be reassured by Truss's interview or that Truss said much of anything. And it works for basically any of those Sunday shows any week.

Poor Thorns, describing her as a generic Labour MP.

Small mercies - Patel has stepped down as Home Secretary, to be replaced by Braverman :bleeding:

Nadine Dorries has stepped down as Culture Secretary, no doubt to be elevated to the Lords.

Although Dorries did produce my favourite moment of the race after her tweet about Liz Truss getting her ear-ring for £6 from Claire's Accessories, while Sunak was photoed in £450 Prada shoes. At the debate the day after this Truss was asked about the tone with this as an example and, after a long pause, said "I don't know how she knows that"

Edit: And reporting from Telegraph indicates plans to outflank Labour on energy:

Some bits of intel on Liz Truss team's energy package plans...

1/ They're looking at freezing energy bill all the way to 2024, when the next election's expected.
2/ Why? Matches their thinking that energy bills will stay high into 2024. Matches hope to go big early + not repeat interventions. Is what energy firms want. Kwasi today wrote about helping families through winter 22/23 *and* 23/24.
3/ They're leaning towards a freeze for **all** households (28million) rather than just a section, per multiple campaign sources. A bit like Covid furlough - a simple, blunt approach being favoured to a more tailored, complicated, bespoke scheme for speed and impact.
4/ A freeze to 2024 for all household bills would go way beyond Labour plan (freeze to early 2023) in duration + cost. One source said "huge" intervention coming.

(But specifics not yet locked in - discussions still v much live per campaign / Treasury folk so it remains fluid).
5/ Support for businesses much more complicated than households. One idea per source is effectively freezing bills for smallest firms.

Some in Truss camp going cold on Covid-style biz loans as many companies are already piled with debt from the pandemic.
6/ There will also be measures to boost energy supply announced alongside the bills package.

Ban on fracking to be lifted, coming into effect rapidly (doesn't need legislation). Regulations also set to be slashed on offshore wind to increase capacity.

Not much I'd disagree with there, but you can allow fracking all you like but good luck getting the planning permissions required

So I'm watching a clip of Dragon's Den, which is the UK copy of Shark Tank, and I learn that the Brits, or at least one, pronounce "schmuck" as "schmook."

Tonitrus

We already know that Brits pronounce things strangely.  Such as Don Quixote as "quicks-ot".

I have a hard time keeping a straight face when they say You Rye Nal.

AFAIK Dragon's Den predates Shark Tank.
