Work isn't the only reason to live in London.
It is however a sympathetic one where you have no better choice and it's absolutely horrid that you have to pay so much for housing.

Choosing to be in London purely for the crack.... Well if you decide you want to move to Monaco to soak in the  climate then that's your choice but don't come whinging to me about how expensive it is. That's quite a "well duh" moment.
You choose to live in a trendy expensive place then you better have trendy expensive funding.

(full sympathy remains for those born and raised in the place who are priced out. Referring solely to those who move there here)

It is sure as hell it is not the weather or the rents.

It is indeed too hot and sunny in London.

Well.
I don't know what to think here.
On the one hand- yes, recycling is great. And its just a small outbuilding for a hospital. Not like they're trying to say it actually is a new hospital....
On the other.... it does perfectly demonstrate in one photo underfunding in railways, the north, and the NHS.
And fairly minor works on hospitals elsewhere are being passed off as new hospitals....

Weird to suggest that the only thing that London has going for it is high salaries that are negated by high rents.

Yeah - I think the pacers are an example of the underfunding of the North already. So I'm not convinced re-using them as buildings for schools is necessarily a great look

Whenever Tyr posts about London I think about a map I saw on Twitter of like the map of the UK from the North-East which just had London as the eye of Sauron

Thats not what I said at all

If you have no choice but to be in London to have a career- then your complaints about high rents are completely valid and deserving of massive sympathy, this is a big problem that needs to be fixed with people born and raised in the area and key workers being priced out.
If you chose to be in London because of the music scene or whatever- so a popular place with a lot going on has a lot of people who want to live there which pushes up prices. You don't say. This is to be expected.
Its a difference of choosing to be somewhere for leisure reasons vs. having to be somewhere for reasons largely beyond your control.

I would probably have stayed in London but my wife didn't like it. The combination of everyday anonymity and also having loads of interesting people within a few miles was very attractive for me.

Who has to be in London because of their career? MPs?

When I was trying to start my career in the digital sphere all the jobs being in London was a massive blocker- affording to go to interviews was tough, and then there was being at my best after an early start and 8 hours on the bus.
Today it is less terrible than it was a decade ago, but for a huge number of professional jobs London is most likely where you have to be.
A quick search and I fail to find solid overall solid numbers but a huge percentage of professional jobs, especially at a junior level, are in London. Playing around with LinkedIn and a few search terms I get between 1/3-2/3.

Maybe don't people shouldn't pick a career paths that require them to be in London then? Why should they get sympathy if moving to London only exacerbates the issues?

Of course, people don't actually have to live in London to work in London...

Ridiculing Tyr's textbook Northern biases is always fun, but it is blindingly obvious to any casual observer that most of the country's jobs are in and around London.
