May activating Article 50 was retarded. And doing it without any preparation was beyond retarded.

I know I shouldn't be surprised anymore but wtf.

May has played a bad hand poorly.  Cameron decided to give the UK a bad hand.

How would you have played the hand?

I think it's more accurate to say she was dealt a losing hand and just played it.

Figure out what exactly is meant by the leave vote and least get a framework with the EU on leaving before invoking Article 50.  What was the rush here?

The phrase "running around like a headless chicken" springs to mind.  :hmm:

Agreed.

However I think that doesn't eliminate the underlying problem, which is that you have four different blocks of MPs, each with their own idea of how to proceed, none with a majority.

Jesus Fucking Christ. Even the 2 weeks extension was being too nice to those idiots. Rip the band-aid off and good luck to ye.

Richard Hakluyt

This is precisely why most referenda require more than a mere majority.

All the more reason not to invoke Article 50.  Put the pressure on the Brexiteers to come up with a working alternative that has proper support before pulling the trigger.  You don't start assembling your parachute after you jump out of the airplane.

If they stay locked in the stalemate do nothing.  Eventually a coalition will form or opinions will change against leaving.  It might cost her politically, but this path has not covered her in glory.

This is asinine.  It's like being crushed by a glacier because nobody could agree on which direction to escape.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Duel question 2nd referenda would be best.

Question 1: Leave or remain
Question 2: If leave wins again, how? Norway option, May's option, No deal

It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

The really important thing is to let British citizens living outside the UK vote.

May's promise is reminiscent of a pledge Prime Minister Chretien made in his last election as Liberal party leader in which he promised that if elected, he would resign before the next election - iirc.
I do not remember him making a public pledge about it during a campaing.

What I think I recall is he might have promised Paul Martin he would resigne before the end of his next term, only to recant once in power, just to make him look bad.  And then he finally left as the sponsorship scandal was gaining traction.
