And it seems none of the major parties or restore are running. Greens only ones yet to comment.

Dreadful mistake by Farage. He's been a brilliant political operator for 15 years but has totally lost the plot.

If no-one else runs will this give Binface a chance of actually winning?

Restore's line is smart, basically "we're not going to run in a vanity by-election, we'll run in the second one after the investigations into your finances are finished."

I think Badenoch's response was good too - said before but she's growing into the role (I think it possibly helps that she likes a fight and that is a big part of the job of leader of the opposition). Lib Dems, Labour and Tories will stand because they kind of have to.

And Farage made that announcement knowing (as he was asked for comment) that the Guardian had a scoop in tomorrow's paper that his bank flagged the £5millipn as suspicious to the National Crime Agency under AML rules (may be less to this than meets the eye as banks massively over-report this stuff). I think there's more to come and trying to control the political narrative won't help with the drip-drip-drip, especially as I think the press will all have a sense that the story's there and hunt like a pack. I think so far the Times and Guardian are competing for exclusives on this and that's not going to stop.

Edit: Apologies - also a Telegraph scoop tying the dodgy money to Reform party donations. The story's not going anywhere just because of a by-election.

Edit: Sorry I hadn't seen that all the parties had refused to stand using a similar line to Restore - I think that happened when David Davis forced a by-election to campaign against ID cards and the other parties didn't stand which just left him looking ridiculous. Think it's smart - especially in the "attention economy".

Having said that I actually slightly wonder if it's one Polanski should go for? He wouldn't have a chance in Clacton - but again in an attention economy I think it would get a lot and if he stood. I think the public admire a bit of elan (see Burnham) and in British, parliamentary politics you never get to stand against your actual opponent so this is a rare opportunity. Plus I suspect Farage is a dreadful local MP and I think the Greens could absolutely flood it with (carefully trained) activists. Polanski would lose but a great way to get the limelight again on the fight he says he wants :hmm:

No I think the C-word and others derived from female anatomy should be reserved for women to use as insults, if they wish. Though perhaps tit should still have equal opportunity use.

I'm still very much in favour male originated words like wanker, prick, dick etc to still be used with thingy* abandon.  :bowler:

* why is gay used in this expression, other than perhaps in it's happy meaning?

I think it was used in the happy/carefree sense - to abandon, surrender yourself joyfully, without a care in the world, no?

But then by your logic women can't use those phallic  words. How dare you deny women verbal equality. Quite sexist of you :P

I mean fair enough. Though in this particular case it'd be hard to find a replacement that fits the schema.

What do people think? Should the non-fascist parties send volunteers down to Clacton to campaign for Count Binface or will that queer his pitch?

Yeah, the classic meaning of gay is joyful/carefree, I always asumed that's why the homosexual community adopted it? Anyway,  I still remember the snickering in class whenever it popped in Catalan literature.

I do think Catalan poets that win the grand slam in Barcelona's poetry contest (winning the award for each genre of poetry) still bear the awesome title of "Master in Gay Science".

I find "a real Canute" a fair replacement in writing.
