I think base building was a pretty interesting part of the game as well, especially in the Long War mod.  In the base game it had too much of snowballing effect to it, so that part should've been fixed.

Game comes out Friday. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive and totalbiscuit seems to love it. Basically saying its going to be the best game of the year - and it just started

Fuck, I should not have watched that review.

Now my gf is mad because I seem to be more excited about a game than seeing her after a week apart.

I'm going to hold off on this one a while.  Two reasons, money's been tight, and when I get a new good game I don't search for a job as hard as I should.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

 Third mission (VIP rescue) was already a brilliant disaster. Sniper, Specialist and two Rookies. They make good progress, but then I botch it. Sniper gets mind controlled and shoots the specialist. After that, a zombie kills the specialist. The Rookies panic and shoot the sniper. The following turn they take out the remaining baddies, but they miss extraction by one turn and are now captives.

I'm not sure I will buy on release, though. I still have other stuff to get through first.
....aaaand you're the first to post about playing the game

Nice touch, btw: in some missions there's holographic displays in the streets with announcements from the alien regime. I was zoomed in on one of my squad members when I noticed that among the announcements are mugshots of your soldiers.

Can you rescue your captured soldiers, or do they go into vats and dissolve?  My best and cutest specialist was exactly one tile short of the extraction zone with 1 turn to go.  :frusty:

User reviews are currently "Mostly Positive" on Steam. Most common complaints are:
- performance issues (I find it runs fine and without notable stutter on "High" settings on GTX 770 with 3GB RAM, though I guess it's a bit far from 60 FPS)
- some graphical glitches (TB mentioned in his video that e.g. the action zoom in camera can be wonky; also, if you hated the clipping in the first game - it's not fixed)
- turn limits - several of the early missions give you a (pretty tight) turn limit to reach a certain objective; there are already mods tweaking/disabling them
- some other bugs (e.g. enemies occasionally ignoring walls)

TB mentioned that he rescued one of his captured soldiers later in the game.
