Getting a professional photo taken for work today. The location was just given as the rooftop of a random office building a block from the White House. Turns out it has a really spectacular view of the National Mall, facing Arlington. I don't often get to enjoy it in the dsy to day, but DC is a really beautiful city.

Britain's eurovision song was good. Though the mix seemed a bit broken.

Germany will abolish the eight hour workday in June. This is being proposed by the social democratic labour minister. :hmm:

Out of interest what's the thinking/discourse on Germany's social model if the China shock continues? Just wondering how that model and the education system interact with China being an increasingly strong exporter in many of those industries?
Let's bomb Russia!

I've not been following closely, but it's mainly moving away from a daily maximum of work hours (8, in exceptional cases 10, if it can be compensated) to a weekly one. Full time employment is still defined as between 34 and 40 hours/week. And resting regulations will stay in force, so if you're working shifts there need to be at least 11 hours between two work periods.

The only reference to China's competition in politics is that Germans should work more according to our chancellor. The fact that we (and China!) have a demand, not a supply issue is not mentioned. At the same time, working is made super unattractive by super high taxes on income from labour.

I work in an industry with very tough Chinese competition and the factors why we have a hard time competing are actively analyzed and we try to emulate successful Chinese approachrs. The main obstacle is risk averseness and too inefficient company internal decision making processes though, not external factors like state bureaucracy or too high energy prices. Those might have an impact on pure manufacturing competitiveness though.

So... gotta work weekends now?

This is the time of year when there's just about 4-5 hours of darkness in Norway. I am up, sipping a strong (too strong, really) coffee, proud that I managed 6 hours of sleep. The sun is up too, the morning dew glistens in the grass.
And reminds me I need to cut it.

It is a beautiful day. Have a good one, people.
