Cant name the last 5- probably has memory issues.

Romania is a tricky one. I'd say it's part Central Europe, part Eastern Europe,  part Balkans.

Yeah Romania's not Central European.

But my broad divide is Central Europe = basically Austro-Hungarian empire, Mitteleuropa, angst, Freud, coffee and cake. Eastern Europe = Russian Empire and Balkans = Ottoman Empire.

Like you very strongly notice the difference in the vibe and aesthetic of, say, Kyiv or Odessa with Lviv or Chernivtsi.

I think we can forgive an 18-year-old for not knowing who the presidents were before she became aware of what a president is.

I don't think Central Europe exists anymore. It did, in the way Sheilbh described it, but that was before 50 years of Russian rule. The architecture is the only thing that remains.

I do think it will come back.
The old cold war / new and old Europe divide remains for now, but give it a few decades and a levelling off of development then maybe we will get into more of a central definition again.
