There is an iconic tree in the North-East, the sycamore gap, which is right on Hadrian's Wall in a particularly scenic setting:



I see this morning that someone has cut it down:



When I was at school I remember my biology teacher talking abou the oldest trees in the world - and there was some specific species in the western US. In particularly I remember him mentioning that someone had recently burned one or chopped it down and, in his view, "they should be shot" Always thought it was just a bit mad from a man who maybe loved biology too much, but I'm starting to be persuaded

Can't imagine what would provoke someone to do that

Although I think it's actually a profoundly anti-social act cutting that tree down. The tree in itself is meaningless, its value is that we find it beautiful (which is maybe a little different than the old trees in the US?).

It's not like I wouldn't spend most my day in office walking about and reading the news. :p

This is a key point for me. Whoever is raising "they work more there" as a pro-office argument are either naive or dishonest.

Sometimes it's very hard to cross the mental divide between modern times and ancient pre Roman Britain, but then someone defiles a sacred tree and everyone (rightfully) calls for their immediate execution
