Quote from: crazy canuck on September 20, 2023, 12:11:07 PMBuffet makes exactly the same argument - he expressly says the system needs to be dramatically reformed so that wealthy people pay more in tax.  He says that the current system is both unfair and reduces the available resources to fund public works.

But people feel great about saying he is a bad person because he does not voluntarily give.  Garbon says there is a magnitude of difference to hide the hypocrisy of the position taken by those who say they also don't give because they think the system should be reformed rather than depending on charity.

Even more fundamentally the argument that Billionaires are by definition bad people, is it takes the focus off the one thing that does need to change, as identified by both Billionaires and their critics - the current system.

Thanks for clarifying, that makes sense.

To be fair to garbon, he did apply a similar analysis to himself in the context of his neighbourhood.

Re: Buffet - I agree with the thing he said (or vice versa). One could argue (and to be clear, I'm not sure I want to argue it but I'm putting the argument forward to be tested) that Buffet ought to put his significant economical, social, and political capital behind enacting change to the system.

I'm with Hillary.  Tipping someone you think is underpaid is exactly the same principle as fair trade coffee.  :)

I don't do meditation.  I drink alcohol to relax, like normal people.

If Microsoft Excel decided to stop working overnight, the world would practically end.

Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Quote from: Grey Fox on September 20, 2023, 11:39:33 AMNone of us, especially if you are not American, should be using Uber or Lyft or any other app based delivery services.

Their use harms your local companies and collaterally rob you of economic sovereignty.
I usually use a British company though occasionally get special offers for uber eats so will use that. By doing so I'm actually hurting uber financially in their vain hope they can lock me in :p

QuoteThen why use an unfair system and benefit from it? "Those guys are bad for not paying wages, but yay me for exploiting it"?
What alternative do you suggest?
Joining a commune somewhere and living off grid surviving purely off what we grow ourselves?
No thanks.
The system is broken and needs improvement but not taking part in the  system at all isn't a good alternative. It's still there even if you ignore it.
Good Place final season much?

Please tell me how your logic differs from Buffet's argument.

What buffet argument?

Don't order delivery? It's not a necessity? If you want to hold the stance that a higher class exploiting a lower class is wrong then you can either acknowledge you're part of the problem in this instance or yoy can switch to take out or cook at home. Its not that difficult a scenario.

So don't support local restaurant businesses?

As to collecting it myself - working for minimum wage sucks. But nobody is forcing anyone to take this job other than shitty financial circumstances. In that situation having no job at all is even worse.
It's a completely sensible stance to want a service and want the people doing the work to deliver it to be paid properly as standard.

Plus I've got  2 infants to look after (one of whom is pretty sick right now),a horrible giant car, and sometimes I'm tired and/or want to eat something that tastes good.

Just saw a clip of the King's state trip to France and hearing someone in a Parisian crowd shout "vive le roi" is unsettling.

I'm not overly familiar with what he's doing. I vaguely recall his children aren't inheriting his massive wealth (just enough to "be comfortable"). I know he's giving a bunch to the Gates Foundation, which is doing significant charity work in a number of areas. And, of course, I'm aware of the famous quote about his secretary.

I'm not really aware of any effort he's putting into changing the system, as it is - what's he doing?

You are increasing their sales volume.  It's good for the stock market.

You're saying you want all delivery customers to pay more for the service because it's the right thing to do, but you're unwilling to do the right thing unless everyone else is compelled to.
