Saw my aunt on Sunday.
She gave me 50p for my kid. Apparently its a tradition you give kids silver when you meet them for the first time.
She says when her kids were born she took them for a walk and got quite a bit of money from people for this.
Now. I've never heard of this tradition at all.
Anyone?
Or is it super local?

Yeah, most of my relatives did it back in the day. My youngest was given silver coins by a couple of the most old-fashioned relatives in 2002. Of course we are both from the same part of England, and I have no idea if it was done elsewhere.

Back in the days when £2 could be a week's wage getting half-crowns off relatives, friends and acquaintances would be a useful supplement I think.

Yep and old tradition, not necessarily exclusive to England.

IIRC it was a silver sixpence when I was a child, obviously those aren't now in circulation. And even in the 60s I think it had to be a quite old coin as the silver content by then had all but gone.

Not to go all Timmay, but reports of a loud explosion in central southern Israeli near the location of the Dimona (sp?) nuclear weapons plant; has Iran perhaps just targeted Israel in retaliation for the recent sabotage in Iran??   

Alternatively, and more likely, Hamas had used longer range rockets fired from Gaza.
