Barcelona has a Karl Marx square, an Engels street, a Che Guevara street, and Allende street, May 1st street. Plus several local socialists and worker activists.

But there's also Adam Smith square, John Paul II street, Human Rights Gardens, Churchill Gardens, JFK street, Willy Brandt street, John Maynard Keynes street,  John Lennon square (lovely place, got drunk many times there)...

To be frank, you can very much track the street naming trends with the political atmosphere in the city. Lots of socialist names in the 1980s after Franco died, more neutral "human rights and civic causes" stuff in the 1990s-2000s, a brief swing to the right/nationalism in the 2010s, and again to the left in the late 2010s-2020s

I don't think socialist paradises in Scandinavia have any Karl Marx streets.

There was some debate about whether or not to tear down the Churchill monument near the Akershus fortress in Oslo about a decade or so back. Sense won out, so old Winston is still watching the harbour. Probably thinking about why the hell he is placed in Oslo.

Sweden isn't big on naming streets after foreigners. The splendid isolation of the 20th century may have played a part.

I was a bit shocked many years ago to see a red star in Vienna (was a theatre I think?). As far as Eastern European sensibilities went at the time, it might as well had sported a swastika.

Total aside but it is something I've always thought London makes too little of - it's revolutionary heritage. I think Paris is quite proud of theirs and in London they get Blue Plaques on the houses they lived in, but I sort of feel we should have a Miranda Street, Mazzini Square, Karl Marx Road  I blame the dead hand of monarchism <_<

Obviously carries on into the 20th century too and in fairness there are statues of, say, Gandhi and Nehru. But we should be more ambitious.

Paris has nothing on red suburbs such as Ivry-sur-Seine with their Boulevard Lénine.  :P

Nice detail to have a street named after Saint-Just, ending in a dead-end near the périphérique, not far from the cemetery of the Batignolles, though.  :D
Plenty of Robespierre ways in the suburbs as well.

Even more objectionable, a rue Jean Calvin.  :x  :yuk:
