I'm not sure I'm sold on the new lightsaber effect yet:

It looks like a flame, rather then a solid blade.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

That kid was great in Attack the Block.

And insult to British film making.

hmm, true, I do like the effect though it isn't consistent with what we've seen before.
I'm somewhat tempted to say its due to interaction with the snow. Maybe? Or probably just cool for the sake of cool.

Wouldn't the guard have to be light also close to the hilt for it to have the desired effect?

I'm reasonably sure it'll be used exclusively by the new with villain.

They always have to come up with new twists on lightsabers.  First it was just blue and red.  Then ROTJ introduced green sabres.  Phantom Menace introduced a double lightsaber.

Like I said, it could be a form of ejected gases burn-off from the internal mechanics of the sabre.  Or, it could just be Hollywood bullshit.

Hollywood will cock it up. The latter for sure.

It looks like more of a bound plasma effect.

Well they aren't reasonable weapons to begin with.  Trying to figure out uses for a light saber is like trying to come up with a scientifically plausible zombie plague.  It misses the point.  The reason there light sabers and zombies is because they are thematically appropriate.  Star Wars is about taking pop culture themes from the 1930's and '40s and bringing up to the modern age (well the late 70's and early 80's).  So you have swashbuckling Errol Flynn sword fights, WWII dogfights but in outer space.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Not all light sabres are constructed the same either, you know.  It's not like they all came off the same mold at Springfield.  JEEZ

Incidentally I've been searching for a decent obit for her, but can't find one but RIP P.D. James :(

This piece, from ConservativeHome about her novels is lovely and perceptive though:

Yes, I was surprised so little tv or press coverage there has been on her passing.  :(
