The Minsky Moment

QuoteJUSTICE SCALIA:  Well, if that's going to be the Justice Department's position, then we're going to  have to be much more careful about how extensive statutes are.  I mean, if you're saying we're always going to prosecute the most severe, I'm going to be very careful about how severe I make statutes.

I didn't think the judiciary was supposed to make statutes.

Little Freudian slip there. . . .
The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

Case involves application of Sarbanes-Oxley's document destruction criminal rules against a fisherman who threw under-sized fish overboard.

Heard about that on NPR. Crazy.

Have you seen these commercials trying to sell people shares of oil wells?

Just when you think you might be getting a handle on part of what America is about, things like this crop up and totally befuddle you.  :D

It's got to be some kind of scam, but what it tells me is the boom is getting played out.

Frack you, man.  Energy independence in, like, 21 months.

They showed the prepper ad on CNN again.

They altered the voice over though.  Now it says "prepper" right in the first line.   Something like "people laugh at preppers...."

Were they pictures of 'nodding donkeys'?

We've some of those hereabouts and their output can amount to little more than a small road tanker once or twice a week.

I like the one with the guy that's worried about the grid.  When the Chinese turn the lights off, it's going to be a while before they come back on.

Never get involved in a land war in Asia, and never go in against a Russian when energy is on the line.  I see no reason why we should rape our ecosystem because you guys were stupid enough to get in bed with the mob.  Dumbasses.

They have the opposite problem. We've got a gas glut in North America and almost no way to get it across the ocean. It's being flared off at the wellheads still. They got nothin and have to buy it all from Putin. Well not everyone. The Dutch and Spanish and a couple others not so much. The whole former eastern bloc definitely plus Germany.

Wasn't that long ago--2000ish--that the UK and Norway were net exporters.  So solly.  But they had years to know what kind of man Putin was, what he was about, the kind of business partner the Russians were--and yet they did it anyway, selling their energy security to him to save a few bucks.

Fuck them.  Fuck them in their hypocritical, sanctimonious, balls-of-light bullshit ears.
