Well, let's think about it.  Metal is emo for people who aren't in high school anymore.  Now, what attracts women to emo?  The fact that they're too young to know any better.  Thus, where does metal fail?  The women are old enough to know better.
Metal isn't my music of choice, I was just there as the pickings are rather slim for anything remotely rock related in Newcastle.
Metal though is not at all emo.
'Emo for people no longer in high school' would be more James Blunt and those other such popular, dull, moany folks.

The only reasons I can think of are the mentioned sweaty assosiations and perhaps that such harsh music doesn't appeal to many women (sexism, yey!)

I went into Newcastle yesterday and ended up at the town's metal bar, I noticed that it was something like 90% guys there, you rarely see women involved with metal elsewhere too.

Weird, I see plenty chicks here at metal concerts (esp. folk metal).

Though a lot of girls I know, though liking some metal, generally prefer EBM/Dark Wave.

Girls go to bars where there's already lot of girls. It's really not that complicated.

I wonder what it is that totally turns women away from metal.

Sure, there's the 'sweaty' nerdy image associated with metal and there were a large number of those types there but there were also a large amount of otherwise fairly normal seeming people.

The Big Mac Index is obsolete.  I prefer the Tandoori Chicken Index, the Tofu Lasagna Index, and the Beef Enchilada Index.
