Israeli and Siegy-type hardcase Jews have always had a stick up their ass over American Jews and the issue of assimilation--as if the successful assimilation of generations of Jewry in the US has somehow watered them down:  they're quasi-Jews.  Semi-Jews. I believe it started in '67.  At least that's when France stopped selling arms.

For France the roots were even earlier, in the wake of the withdrawal from Algeria, when De Gaulle sought to "rebalance" relationships with the Arab world.   Prior to that French-Israeli relations were very, very tight.

I don't think that it is catastrophic at all.  It is actually a source of hope, in fact.  If people start to marry for love and not because they have some racist shibboleth against "intermarriage," it foretells a brighter future.

What also concerns me is the overt hate of Israel by so many and more tolerance of the Palestinian side, given that we would seem to have had a real comeuppance about with radical Islam which is a part of the Israeli-Palestinian issue.   

The only thing of value the Palestinians have done is lose.  And these days that makes the noble.

Didn't used to be that way;  back in the day, when Israel was the punky upstart trying to survive in a jungle surrounded by predators and pulling off balls-out feats like Entebbe, it was the darling of the conventional European Left, despite being filled with Jews. 
But since '82, when the invasion of Lebanon officially made Israel the Big Meanie^tm, it's been the other way around.

I never understood the fear of being "culturally assimiliated" that some people have. Polish culture is tedious - I wish Bismarck had done a better job. I can't fathom why Belgians, Jews, Quebecois or Arabs would be more worthy of preserving as a culture than Poles though.
