Maybe buy one the cheapest 802.11ac you can find, and then replace the firmware with DD-WRT.   Check their database first, to see if they support the model you want to buy.
You'll need a LAN cable to do the upgrade, but then you're good to go.

Otherwise, wait a little longer.  802.11ac is still the newest stuff, the prices will go down by year end, I'm sure.

if you are using a USB adapter for wireless access, that could be your problem.  I don't think USB 2.0 can deliver much more transfer speed than that. 
It could also be that your laptop has a 802.11n wireless adapter built-in, wich has a maximum theoritical speed of 600mbps.

If you're connected directly with a lan cable, than that does not apply of course.

Here's a few things to try:

• Plug your computer directly into the modem (a reset might be necessary, unplug for 30 seconds, replug, wait for all the lights to be ok), go to www.speedtest.net and check if your speed is what your ISPs advertizes.  A few tests in off-peak hours (late at night, early in the morning) might be necessary to get a decent reading.  If you don't get the advertized speed, contact your ISP for a diagnostic.
  
• replug the modem to the router, plug directly into a LAN port.  Do you get your full speed?  If not, there is a problem with your router.
  
• Now with your wireless connection, try again a few tests.  If you still can't get above 50mpbs, you have to consider a few things.
  
• Upgrade the drivers for your USB or PCI-E adapter.
  
• Upgrade your router firmware to the latest provided by your manufacturer, or ideally DD-WRT.
  
• Use 40mhz channel for 2.4ghz.  If you have dual band router and adapter, use 5ghz.
  
• Remember that 600mbps is a theoritical limit.  To achieve that speed, you need to be no more than 1-2m from the router with your wireless connection.  The moment you get farther, or even worst, if you cross a wall, it drops significantly.  If you live in an appartment complex with many routers and cordless phones around, your speed can drop even more.

50mbps for 802.11n are typical real-life speed for these devices.  802.11ac brings 1.5x-2x more speed, but drops significantly less when you are far from the router.

Thanks. I plugged in a cable and got the 100mbps connection without problem. It might be the apartment complex situation that makes it worse, there's at least 30 connections to choose from when I search for wireless, I can only guess how many mobile phones, tablets and laptops are close by.

I'll wait for a reasonably priced ac router I think.
