Do any of you parent or uncle/auntie types have any favourite books appropriate for 1 to 3 year olds you can recommend?

Goodnight Moon was always both my nieces' favorites at bedtime.

My kids love big picture books with pictures of animals, or of construction equipment.  Apparently there doesn't have to be any story involved.  We just point to the Tiger, or bulldozer, ask him what it is, and then tell him.

Anything with flaps or pop ups are also a big hit.

Fairy tales are a pretty good bet too.  Stories like Goldilocks, or the Three Little Pigs, are classics for a reason.

I liked some board book Dr. Seuss stories, but I'm not sure they're my kids favourites.

Sandra Boynton is pretty good too.

Caillou, you heathen.

If you actually want to read it to them then I have no recommendation. Different language and all.
Colonel Caliga is Awesome.

That is the best.

I think it works because of the tempo of its prose.  Combined with a rocking chair, it's a great decompressor for bedtime and it simply knocks toddlers out.  I really enjoyed doing that with them.

lustindarkness

Thick cardboard books, so I can hit them over the head with it when they don't pay attention.
