The Very Hungry Caterpillar was always very popular.

The Hairy Maclary books are very good too.

I liked Not Now Bernard, but it is pretty cruel.

So many cool books for toddlers

Richard Scarry.

This was a big favorite.

Huge hit here too.  Best First Book Ever and Cars & Trucks and Things That Go are almost nightly reads.

Or if you really want to traumatize the little ones:

Warning: actually reading this book to children is probably a form of abuse.  :P

  That was Dwight Schrute's favorite book.

That was around my grandparents' house when I grew up. Maybe one of the uncles still has it lying around somewhere...

I had the book.  Dad frowned on it being in the house, but mom thought it was harmless.  I was kind of annoyed by the book, as it just didn't seem plausible that tigers could turn into butter (sorry for the spoiler).

In all seriousness, my kids' favorite book at this age was The Pigeon Wants a Puppy.  Flap Your Wings was a close second.

I'm told that Pat the Bunny was one of my favorites when I was 1-ish.

Go with some of the classic Little Golden Books, like "The Poky Little Puppy" or "The Saggy Baggy Elephant".  I'd be hesitant about some of the newer titles, though--there are too many TV and movie tie-ins there for my taste.
