It will be interesting to see what direction Europe will take as it builds up its own military and reduces its ties with the US.

By interesting, I mean unsettling and anxiety inducing...

True, but the American politics threads are elsewhere.  This one is about Ukraine.

The German cabinet on Wednesday signed off plans for a new military service model as Berlin looks to revamp its depleted armed forces in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Good luck out there, Europe.  It was fun.

It probably will only result in Germany using a bigger font-size on their sternly worded letters

The Nordics and East Europeans are running their weapons factories on 3 shifts and have for some time now. That won't change. The Balts and Poles are rearming as fast as they can.

Not sure how much is reported abroad, but Germany is in a deep domestic political and economic crisis. Don't expect anything anymore from the current government. And it is unclear if there would be any stable coalition after an election.

If NATO doesn't rise to the occasion, they were never worth anything to begin with.

Good, I also hope they build nukes and a lot of them.
The rest appears to be sleeping though.

Being next door: we've heard.
Things aren't going much better here: coalition talks are collapsing because the socialists think that the government doesn't waste enough money yet. Even the idea of going back to the ballot-box have been muttered (and that's something that hasn't ever happened in Belgium, iirc)

Sounds very much like Europe fiddles while the US burns. We're fucked. The West that Ukraine is fighting for no longer exists.

And the German government just fell apart.

I'm not sure that that is a bad thing.

Was only a question of when, not if after the last few months of quagmire. But even with a new election, I fail to see any stable government with a majority.

German parliament will likely be dissolved in January, new elections in March. Until then a minority caretaker government that will try to pass a few laws with the main opposition party.

Considering how the FDP micro-party kept working against their two supposed partners, and how ineffectual Scholz was at keeping things in line it's not a surprise.

Seems high risk though given that I think last polls I saw the FDP might not even have seats after an election?

Or is that wrong (I know there's a new electoral system now would that change things for them)?
