What if you are quoting someone?
Unless you are quoting Sam Clemens, you are quoting an asshat.  Nothing wrong with that.
The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.   -G'Kar

I wouldn't use it.  I don't think it's possible to use it in an ironic sense really.  Maybe one day it will be.

You can use it for ironic impact, but only if your real name is Samuel Clemens.

Any one else using it, whether "black" or "white" or anything in between or beyond, is making themselves sound like an asshat, whether they realize it or not.
This.

It doesn't bother me on the internet, but I have called out people in RL for using it.

You need to change avatars.  I keep confusing you with that fascist guy.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I think Fascists are too amoral, socialist and undemocratic for BB's taste.

Is niggard still ok to use?
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

As long as you realize it has the same connotation.

In Sweden some bright folks have decided to try to claim the word blatte for the good side. Blatte is an offensive term for non-European immigrant typically of ME origin. It's not a nice word so when I see it in big letters on a sign or something I just groan.

I use the word myself in select company for making jokes etc. In fact I have done so on this very board. Or its ancestor.
