Streatham to Waterloo's not that bad. Or do they then get the train down to where you are?

I'm about 3 miles from work and I go home for lunch, so it's about 12 miles a day commuting, 60 miles a week, about 240 miles a month which is less than a tank of gas, so I'd say about $30.00 monthly.

Streatham to W'loo is horrendous in the rush hour. Takes a good 35 minutes just to get through Brixton.

About 40 minutes if I walk. I can sometimes save time if I take the bus; it depends on when I leave. Buses only run every half hour so if I just miss one it is faster to walk than to wait for the next one. My university ID is also a bus pass though, so either way it costs nothing out of pocket.

If I drove I would have to pay for parking which would be ~$8/day, in addition to gas and maintenance on the car.

Maybe $50 a month, most of time shooting out on location, meaning they pay me for my travel costs.

I wonder what human civilization pays per year on commuting as a whole. Not just in money, but also in time and externalities like pollution and infrastructure support and everything. It has to be staggering.

Starting in January I started taking the bus / LRT.  Which cuts my costs nicely down to $24 per week.  If I was driving it would cost me a tank of gas every week and a half, which would run ~$60-$70.

Still takes me an hour each way during rush hour. <_<

At my old employer, I got charged something like $10 a day to park at the office. There was a parking lot where I could pay $2-$3 a day to park a few blocks away, and that was where I normally parked.

That might be reasonable in a place like London or NYC where public transport is an option, but I think I was getting screwed.

Let's see.  For 8 months out of the year I ride my bike for the 5 minutes to get to work - cost is whatever little wear and tear that adds.

December through March I mostly drive, again about 5 minutes because of the horrendous Laramie traffic.  Cost is not much, I refuel my Honda every now and then - no more than once a month.

0.

But to make up for it my wife has been working 3 days a week down in London and spending about £125 for each return ticket.

Just checked whether I could commute by bus. Three buses and over two hours each way. Unpossible!
