In particular there's one  I've heard of but I can't remember it's name. It's a GPS game where youths the world, largely it rewards travelling  to areas other people haven't though there are battle aspects in crowds  areas. I'm sure it isn't turf wars. Any idea on its name??

Sounds like you're talking about Geocaching.  The name brand app is $10, but there are plenty of "generic" freeware equivalents.  http://gigaom.com/2009/08/17/eleven-geocaching-iphone-apps-worth-finding/

On a second look, there aren't many "complete" freeware solutions.  Sounds like the best bet is to make an account on a forum somewhere to get coordinates and then use something like MotionX to plug in the GPS coordinates.
