The heavy familial involvement thing is somewhat true.  Some of my work colleagues take leave to accompany their 16-17 year old children to take examinations.  Or go to university/school interviews.  These are more common.  I've seen people accompany their university graduate sons and daughters to job interviews, as if that is going to help their chances.  This is rare, but it happens.

Huge.  They're the single largest demographic of legal immigrations to the US.

I would imagine there is a sizeable minority from the railroad construction times.

I share the same cultural background as these guys, but I don't understand this kind of behaviour either.

In Korea, unless you get a job far away from home, you live with your parents until you get married.

Pretty much the same in HK/China.  But you can live with your parents AND go to a job interview by yourself.  Nobody in HK is going to fault a job seeker for living with his parents, but I know plenty of people who will automatically fail anyone who drags the parents along.  Or allow himself to be accompanied.

You can always tell it's the beginning of the new medical semester at Hopkins; the Mings bring three generations with them to campus, taking more photos than Disneyworld.  Used to get more lost visitor calls than any other time, with granduncle Chow getting separated from the brood and winding up in the barometric chamber basement.
