Cardinal Burke apparently is in an ICU with Covid as well.

A study out today shows that about 4% of the population does not respond to the vaccine at all. They are mainly people in the higher risk groups, too. Apparently if you had a kidney transplant the vaccines probably won't work.

These people are bound to get covid eventually, unless they lock themselves away from society.

I think I'm becoming a bad person.

While it would be much better if Abbot and DeSantis supported vaccine mandates, both have been pro vaccine and publicly got vaccinated. Very few Americans would be dying now if people followed their lead.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Legbiter

Daily average remains about the same, abou 100 cases, half are not in quarantine when diagnosed. It's been fairly flat for a while now. Kinda dreading the start of school next week once cases start popping up in staff and the occasional kid.

It seems the US will give booster shots after 8 months.

I'm expecting European countries to follow suit.

40% of the ICU capacity being used here are elderly foreign tourists.  About half are vaccinated but still. They're catching it en route then suddenly get very ill while on holiday.

I wonder how much of that is due to a massive increase in potential exposure when travelling, and how much is due to a correlationb between people who say "you know what, I should totally go on holiday right now" and those who decide "well, Covid's mostly done, right, so I don't have to be careful anymore."

Basically I'm wondering if it's relatively safe to travel if you're careful (and those people mostly aren't), or whether travelling is much riskier (and those people are being careful, but it's not possible to be careful enough while travelling).

Legbiter

These are no daredevils, just regular tourists. Upscale even because we do our level best to prize out the Ryanair stag parties market segment through extortionate pricing. The climate does the rest. They're catching this in the airports and planes while in transit since it's airborne and extremely contagious. They test negative on arrival and since they no longer have to quarantine they're out and about. Israel is airlifting over 30 of their nationals from a tour group that had a large cluster of infections. All were fully vaccinated and suddenly several fell ill and a few had to be hospitalized.

Interesting, and thank you.

We're having discussions about how/ where/ whether to have family Christmas this year... with current developments it looks like we may take travelling off the table.
