One of the people who work at the mental health place I go to died of Covid.  She had gotten the vaccine, so either she was in bad shape before the illness or she just had bad luck.

:(

Sad that it's someone you know; my fear is there's a few acquaintances I know, but don't have the contact details of and I'll never actually find out if they succumb in the pandemic, I'll just stop seeing them about.

Starting today people can get vaccinated at St. Stephen's cathedral:

We had that in our region with Salisbury cathedral, I think they ended up doing about 30,000 vaccinations here.

Unfortunately I live just a few miles too southerly to have had that as an option.  :(

Do you get a free blessing as well?  :P

They are weirdly well-suited to it given the size really helps with ventilation.

I got my second dose at the hospital but the vaccines were being done in the atrium for similar reasons. A very big space to fit enough people and the air could circulate. Plus at some of the cathedrals the cloisters provide a nice sheltered spot to wait.

I got mine in a convention center.  :P

I got mine in a trailer.  Mind you, it was being used as a research lab at the time in the parking lot of a hospital.

I saw this on NPR:

Inspired By 'The Decameron,' These Poems Are A Modern Pandemic Time Capsule

QuoteThe people who fled to their villa in The Decameron would share stories and medieval fables with each other to pass the time. So Stein included our own pop culture moments in her book to highlight the stories we told each other during the pandemic.

"We were all having the same kind of pop culture experience because of what was available for us to stream," she says, talking about her descriptions of viral shows like Tiger King or Love is Blind. "And then we were all tweeting about what we were streaming."

Poems about stress cleaning and Zoom yoga and nighttime beauty routines live next to poems about movies that look at distortions in time, like Groundhog Day.

And realized that are popular culture has grown remarkably lame since the Middle Ages.  It's high time we brought back tales of horny nuns, blind husbands, licentious servants and just general misogyny.

;)
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Seeing two bits of news circulating:

1,000 kids in Mississipi have gotten Covid-19 as schools have opened up without masks.

Also, Mississipi is down to very few ICU beds and the hospital system is close to collapse, relying on Federal backstop capacity.

Iowa state fair has started, nearly a million mask less people to mix over the next 11 days.  <_<

Look everybody has the information now. There is only so much you can do to save people from themselves.

Which is worse than the zillion mask less people mixing in the US in day to day life? Most of life went back to normal a long time ago, though I still can't go back to the office.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

Though, to be fair, if the Iowa State Fair is outside there probably is no serious risk of transmission.
