Yep, something authentic amongst the shit-stick gloss applied by FIFa and American sponsers.
"We have it in our power to begin the world over again"

I really like Wayne Rooney. I think there's always been a lot of snobbery to him because of his accent and because in his first interactions with the media he was a 16 year old from Croxteth.

But I think he's actually a pretty good, smart pundit - although of the TV ones Joe Hart was the revelation for me this year. His explanations of technical goalkeeping points and musing about the ball were really interesting and because it's such a unique position very useful.

Quote from: Josquius on July 20, 2026, 03:18:28 AMThe latest news from Spain is that it is being arranged that Yamal shall bathe 100 babies a week until the season begins so that in the future the power shall remain in red.

In Spain, "to bathe someone" (dar un baño) in sports is to dominate them thoroughly. So that picture has had a lot of mileage in that regard.

Glad it is over. Glad it went alright and the visitors to the US seemed to have had a good time. Glad neither Mexico nor Canada did better than we did. Glad Trump and FIFA only moderately ruined it.

It was unfortunate how the Iranian team was treated but overall it could have been worse.

Sort of like the 250th 4th of July. Basically it was fine, it was a business as usual 4th of July. We all had a good time and watched fireworks and went about our lives. Trump tried to make it about him and mostly failed. Sort of the same thing here.

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

QuoteAs democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Yeah, glad somebody called it what it was.  I hope it won't be replicated again.
Awarded 17 Zoupa points

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

the pictures with the Spanish team and Trump are also a delight...
Trump cropped or photoshopped out. The ghost of Trosky approves

Best troll was the pilot who told his plane full of Argentinians that their team won while they were landing

Quote from: DGuller on July 19, 2026, 05:42:57 PMPoor Mexico and Canada, their leaders are standing there smiling while US and FIFA do all awarding.

Tbf, I was kinda hoping that in keeping with tradition it would be Mexico the one to deliver the gold to Spain. I mean, the cup.

It belongs in a museum!

As an aside the INAH, National Institution for Anthropology and History in Mexico City is the single greatest museum I've ever been to. It is absolutely phenomenal. The collection is stunning and it's so well-presesnted (for someone who nows nothing about the subject). I cannot recommend enough if anyone hasn't been and has a chance to go.

Mexico generally very good for museums (weirdly so is Poland - I assume because they're so politically contested that slightly aside from the political rows the curators have to constantly refresh it ).

Edit: Sorry National Museum of Anthropology, INAH is the body that runs it and other sites.
