Another observer game:

(going back to imgur for screenshots - sorry Brits :P)

Please note that the British capital ships are almost entirely "Modern Ironclads Mod. 1873), with a few coastal defense monitors.

Their most modern ships are a few 1876 torpedo boats.

The Minsky Moment

Another game again with Spain and New Grenada at high comparative SoL and the US low. USA pop also low, probably isn't bringing in lots of immigrants.

May need to make it easier to replace obsolete ships as it seems like the AI is balking.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

It could also be lack of tech. I think you still need radio for dreadnoughts (even if not as construction goods)? And if you don't have that till 1920s or so ...

In one game I saw US being the first one to get to telephones in 1910s or so. I think AI is currently progressing badly in  tech - they may favor military tech mire heavily (for navy) than production, or not have enough education. Need to check on that.

At least there's more naval invasions with the latest patch, but they seem much harder than before.

US is struggling to take their Mexican territories at the moment. I sometimes see them occupy like 60% of Meixco but then white peace out because they don't get Mexico to surrender in time before war support drops for them (I.e. they don't make it to Mexico City).

Gave it another try. 1908. Britain has society tech level 4 almost all unlocked. Not much on Production tech level 4. In military it has unlocked most (not all) Level 3 - but it doesn't have Pre-Dreadnought yet.

(And no, dreadnoughts don't need radio anymore.)

Other great powers are the same (German Empire has slightly more advanced Production tech but is further behind on military).

I thought Vic3 was rather good before the expansion, it just needed some tweaks. Now it's been an overhaul, and it seems it is a rocky road ahead. That's a pity.

One wonders if they have QA at Paradox, and if so what are these people testing?

Martin said after the last few expansions that released quite well he got overambitiius and thought he could cram more things into the DLC last minute instead of doing a feature freeze much earlier.

Next hotfix is supposed to come in June with the goal of getting the AI back on track again (I'm guessing a week or two before their summer break).

BTW, this video has a decent overview of what seems to be the White Peace issue:

In short, white peace acceptance may be ticking up too quickly. But additionally it seems that an attacker may value a war goal at 2X whereas the defender values it 3X, meaning unless defender surrenders it's unlikely they will accept any peace deal.

Was trying a Prussia game with the current patch (and the White Peace fix). Cozying up to GB/Russia to counter-balance France/Austria.

I was having a bit of a struggle of it, because my budget was often in precarious situations. I never dipped deep into debt (interests are a bitch in early game IMHO). At points I had high taxes, plus 8+ consumption taxes to keep my balance afloat e.g. during an 1848 civil war (Labour secessionists in Brandenburg  the only ones I hadn't properly suppressed) or lending a hand to Hanover and Bavaria in their wars in exchange of them becoming my subjects. More than once I paused all state construction.

But getting up to 1851 I have yet to build a single additional construction sector and my navy is only very slowly expanding (up to 5 ships from the 1 I started with). :hmm: My economy is keeping up with the other powers, but I might not understand the new meta because normally I expanded my economy much faster than this in early game.

At least my private investors are building railroads. :P
