I think narco groups have been listed as terrorists by the US for a while. It also doesn't strike me as a million miles from the Obama-era expansion of drone warfare - to an extent this seems like those policies flowing through.

We've always called the certain strain of American foreign policy "isolationist", but that's not really accurate.  Switzerland and Sweden are isolationist.  The US was more unilateralist.  The so-called Isolationists in the US didn't want the US to stop interfering with other countries within it's sphere of influence.  They didn't want the US to be a situation where other countries could influence the US.  What they opposed was the US working with other countries as equals.

Another fair challenge.

I'd say there is a very long strand in American history of isolationism on the Atlantic/East Coast. With it a sense that Europe/the Old World is decadent, it's corrupting and it is trying to entangle America in its concerns (again a line of thinking that I think is present right now) - I think one interesting developing bit on this is the relationship with Israel.

But I think in relation to the Americas and the Pacific, America's imperialist.

My thought is just that if the US declares some narcos as terrorists and it has established that drones are a legitimate tool against terrorists elsewhere in the world, it feels like this is just a matter of time. I feel like the next step will be - and I wonder at what point this happens - basically viewing Latin American sovereignty as as disposable to Trump as, say, Yemen's or Pakistan's. At least this was in international waters but I wouldn't be surprised before the end of this term to see drone attacks in Venezuela.
