Didn't register to me that the Canada-US border was problematic. I mean, it's obviously a very long and hard to police border, but wouldn't have thought it was a significant route for migrants seeking to enter the US illegaly.

It's gone up. You also get high profile stories of people freezing to death trying to cross in winter.

He was from New York.  And he now lives in Florida.  He defo knows what is a Canadian and where it is. (NY State is bordering on Canada and Florida is a prized destination for Canadian "tourists" who like to spend the winter there, a.k.a. 'Snowbirds').
