Title: Newspaper reporter ranked worst job in the U.S.
Post by: Josephus on April 24, 2013, 08:35:02 AM
Just as well, I'm getting out:

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-buzz/newspaper-reporter-named-worst-job-united-states-154825217.html

Now taking bets for the worst job in America. Any takers?
If you bet sewage plant operator, funeral director or dishwasher, you lose this round. No, even military generals and maids have a better balance of work environment, stress and hiring outlook than the job that sunk to the bottom of this year's Career Cast rankings with a clunk.

Newspaper reporter earned the number 200 position — landing below lumberjack — due to the company's assessment that print journalists suffer from high stress and a difficult work environment. Not to mention the ranking for their chance at a promising career future falls into the negatives.
Career Cast lists the average income of US newspaper reporters at $35,275, considerably less than the higher-ranked job of photojournalist. However, photojournalists still fall near the bottom of the job list at slot number 188, slightly behind radio and television broadcasters.
The best job in America, according to the list, is actuary. Despite all those probability calculations of death and destruction, the rankings indicate actuaries have a relatively low-stress work environment and a high chance of employment at a high wage.
[ More Buzz: Twitter cracks jokes about Canada, Via Rail terrorism plot ]
Sadly, the longstanding career of port-a-potty cleaner doesn't appear on the list of rankings. If Bloomberg Businessweek's profile of an employee at the company Johnny On The Spot is an indication, it might have beat newspaper reporter for the worst job in America. Maybe.

This is all over the news here, with the reporters squirming in ironic delight. Alongside print newspapers closing on a daily basis, it's a shitty wage to knock on people's doors and ask how they feel about their kid being murdered.

Here's the full list if anyone's interested, but due to being spread out over several pages, it's not terribly searchable.

Attorney ranks at an unappealling #117.

Watching my father try and survive through the death of print newspapers I can understand why reporter might be the worst job in the world.

Besides, it can't be too bad if it pays for me to have a one bedroom in Manhattan and I get to post on Languish a lot. ;)

I have to admit I don't really understand the green bar ratings. For one job it'll have 6 and a full bar but then another will be 44 and have a partially green bar.  Quick scan of methodology page didn't really explain...

It depends.

A job where you have very little stress and can "leave your work at work" can result in more productive free time; some truly great authors, composers, etc. had very low-stress jobs (wherein they made enough money to cover their expenses) and were able to use their considerable brain power for other pursuits.

I cant think of a position that has no stress.  There is a continuum of autonomy within all workplaces.  On one extreme are people who have no autonomy who always do what they are told when they are told to do it.  On the other extreme are people who have the freedom to decide what needs to be done and how and when to do it.  The latter has it own kind of stress but is more satisfying.  That former is mind dumbingly boring and can be highly stressful (especially if one has a dick for a manager).

Oh, it almost certainly would be worse, yes.

On the other hand, "Wal-Mart Greeter" isn't the only other option. For the same kind of salary you could be doing landscaping work. I don't know about you but I do a lot of my best thinking when I'm out in the fresh air, mowing the lawn, pruning trees, shoveling barkdust, tilling garden beds, etc. And as long as the work is of high quality and performed in a reasonable timeframe the customer - a real customer, who is exchanging money with you for a specified service, not someone who has come to shop at the store at which you work but may see no value in your presence there - is happy.

Become a priest at this Episcopal Church:

$475,000 annual salary — which rises to a total compensation of $1.3 million when his pension and the estimated cost of his residence in a $5.5 million, church-owned SoHo town house are added.

Holy Jesus!
Funny, but normal.

My small hometown Episcopal priest's salary is probably approaching $150,000 by now. And then the perks of living freely in a large historical house on top of the town's center, pension, "discretionary fund", etc.

The question is - are Episcopal Priests allowed to have sex lives?  :hmm:

The great salary, free house deal isn't so attractive if you gotta be celebate.

only Catholics priests have that celibacy rule.

Episcopal priests can also be women (and be gay), and both male and female priests freely marry and have children as well as get divorced. Further, they can later "convert" into the Catholic priesthood and still keep their marriage and family privileges.

Woah, sweet deal. Big salary, free house *and* sex life? What's the catch?

Oh yeah, gotta talk some about Jesus from time to time, right? I can do that.  :)

I, on the other hand, drive myself batshit fucking nuts if I have too much time to think on a job.  Worse thing ever for me was being a security guard with nothing to do.  Boring, and still trapped in my head.

Well, I would say that sitting in a booth or something is not as ideal as doing some physical labor in terms of thinking. The manual labor gets your endorphins going, so the things you're likely to think about are going to be better on average.

Well, no-one but a few odd recluses actually believes any of that stuff. You want a multi-billion dollar enterprise run by an odd recluse? Get Howard Hughes.  ;)

And at black churches (any denomination-- as long as the church has "Ebenezer" in its name) you get to live like a straight up playa-- until you get caught.

Definitely. And that's the case with any big megachurches that spawn all sorts of side commercial revenue streams. At least with denominations like the Episcopal Church, Catholic Church, etc. you actually have to go through years of serious Master of Divinity study and seminary involving ancient Greek/Hebrew study.

These "new" and non-denominational churches usually have no experience or education requirements for their "preachers". It's all about personality and "feelings".

Methodist, Lutheran and even some Baptist churches have some pretty rigid requirements as well.

at least the other ones (well catholic really :P ) hide it by giving the "church" the wealth and not the priests.

They should just cease the charade and replace all religious figures with lawyers. Give Ide a shot at a decent job, it would.

Can't replace 'em with accountants, that would be gratuitously cruel to the congregations - just imagine an accountant giving a sermon.  The boredom! :P

I have to listen to a 2 hour "sermon" tonight. I agree yes, that would be tedious :P

Although, a religion based around lawyers would mean that heaven is full of layers. So on essence: two hells :D

not so true with mainstream Catholic priests and especially the various Catholic monastic orders.
