QuoteFor those using my exposed webcam viewer, here are a few "frequently asked questions" and their respective answers concerning the viewer itself and various other facts you may wish to know.
How does the viewer work?
Very simply, the viewer has a database of webcam feed URLs which is updated regularly. The feeds that are detected as online (i.e. accessible) are displayed in the viewer. The default layout ia a 4x4 grid, which you can alter at the bottom of the page. You can page through the webcams by clicking the Next / Previous links. Clicking on a webcam will open it in a new tab / window.
How did you find all these webcams?
Various techniques. A lot of cameras can be found using Google if you know which search string to use (and you have a lot of patience). I also used Shodan (a search engine created by John Matherly) to get a large number of potential webcam feeds. If you've never heard of Shodan before, I recommend watching these videos by Dan Tentler. Whilst I'm hat-tipping people, I should also give a shout-out to the /r/controllablewebcams community on reddit who helped promote this viewer.
How do you determine whether a webcam is online or not?
At the moment, I'm using a bash script with curl to check the HTTP response code of the webcam feed. This works 99% of the time. When it doesn't work, I manually check the feed and update the database accordingly. The script runs regularly to ensure that offline cameras are not displayed in the viewer that often.
Are all these webcams just boring static feeds?
No. Some (not all) are controllable. If you click through to them and find the control interface, you can move them around. If you are lucky, you will also be able to zoom in on things. Quite a few of the controllable webcams I've seen have very impressive zoom functionality.
Cool. So far I've seen (that I recognize):
The OSU quad in Corvallis
Tampa stadium
Six Flags Over Texas
UofIllinois campus
The dam on the Colorado that you can see from I-70 going through Grand Junction
A prof giving a lecture in Chapel Hill, presumably UNC
The Kentucky Derby track (http://cryptogasm.com/webcams/webcam.php?id=1705) lol
Boston is pretty dead today (http://cryptogasm.com/webcams/webcam.php?id=1909). On lockdown or whatever.
I don't know whose office that is in Harford, CT, but it's nice.
And BA, Argentina is looking lovely at dusk.

Sometimes the location info is inaccurate. The cam showing the pyramids has Scottsdale as a location tag. Obviously, that's where the data center broadcasting the feed is.
Just filtering Seattle/Portland, I am seeing lots of apparent doggie day-cares. :P

lol, yeah I saw that hotel. Shit, they love their animals up there.
You need to move your ass to left coast. Your HBP would drop just by living up there.
Yeah, I've been thinking about stuff like that.

You can deactivate it in the systems settings, though, no?
My work laptop has a cam built in. I just put a piece of tape over it when I'm not using it (which is always). :P

But Barack Obama will personally order a drone to activate it again so he can spy on me.
