According to Sky, South African police have said to the South African media that it was his girlfriend who was shot in the head. The media down there are reporting that she was mistaken for a burgler.
Edit: Apparently he's being questioned. She was shot in the head and the arm :o

Apparently he's been arrested and a case for murder's been opened.

QuoteFollowing a revelatory police conference we have learned that Pistorius is due to appear in a Pretoria court later today and that there had been reports from neighbours of shouting and screaming coming from the house earlier in the evening.
...
The South African police service dismissed previous reports that Pistorius had mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder, saying that these reports had not come from them.
Even before I read that, this burglar angle sounded a little suspect.
Wow. :(

Pistorius fall-out: Nike moves to limit brand damage
By Matthew Wall
Business reporter, BBC News
"I am the bullet in the chamber" ran the strapline for the Nike advert featuring Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius.
As the South African athlete faced charges of "premeditated murder" in a Pretoria courtroom following the shooting dead of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, his sponsors went into crisis-management mode.
Nike swiftly pulled the unfortunately-worded ads, as the perils of celebrity brand endorsement were brought sharply into focus once again.

Why is this story getting so much news coverage, over here on several different channels it's been the main news story for several days ?
For me, I guess it's a good litmus test for lazy journalism and news programmes that have given up their news gathering ethos, preferring to peddle sensationalism and little more than celebrity gossip, rather than the important things going on in the world.
The only important thing going on in the world is the Syrian civil war, and there's nothing new on that right now.

Supposedly the Olympics has one of the toughest drug testing standards, and the story is out that Pistorius had boxes of performance enhancing drugs in his home. I love watching the Olympics, especially the running events (as I run quite a bit myself), but I think if you need to suspend disbelief a bit when watching the events--I wouldn't be shocked if it turned out that the entire 100m mens finals field was doping.
But I think an interesting point of view is that if the Olympics have very tough standards that can be flouted, what does that say about American sports, where you not only have much easier standards but the labor unions fight tooth and nail over any attempt to increase testing?

I think that is the answer--although he would be a different type of sports hero if he won, sort of like a modern day Jesse Owens but disabled (although on the flip side there would probably be backlash that the blades gave him an unfair advantage).
I would add that murdering sports stars are somewhat more common on this side of the Atlantic.

That's an interesting point of view as much because it relies on falsehoods (like the canard that "the labor unions fight tooth and nail over any attempt to increase testing") as because it presumes that the 'high standards" of the Olympics are being flouted based on unknown substances found in the home of a paralympian. I am assuming that you know that "American sports" is a meaningless term when used to refer to drug testing.
What the IOC gets praised for, from what I see, is not their "very tough standards," but their very thorough procedures. The IOC procedures provide for unannounced tests year-round, have good procedures to limit the possibilities of fraudulent submissions, and provide strong security for the samples to deter tampering after submission.
