I took a look at it. Twilight 2000 had some silly shit in it (Italy attacks Austria or something, Mexico goes to war with the US), but the 2013 setting is just one bizarre absurdity after another. France declares ware on Belarus and launches a nuclear strike. Russia moves into Belarus and launches a nuclear attack on France. France launches back but for some reason the US anti-ballistic missile is activated to stop the French nukes from hitting Russia.

ZOMG they have the complete Journal of the Traveller's Aid Society. I hunted used bookstores for a few years for those, don't think I have more than 8-10 though.
But hell - for being PDFs they're not all that cheap...
DAMMIT. Just noticed the bundle of Challenge magazines. Being a GDW fanboy, I'm finding that impossible to resist.

I have been surfing through all the old, and new, Traveller material that's out. I'm of course at least 12 years out of date on this stuff.

I discovered there was a semi-official Traveller setting (officially licensed, but not put out by Marc Miller) which actually expands on the Traveller: TNE timeline. T4 setting itself in the past, and GURPS Traveller just pretending the Rebellion didn't happen, leave me cold.
But after finding that it is now out of print, and the sole hard copy that was for sale was listed for $1000 , I have violated my principles and 'acquired' a PDF.
And now the afternoon's productivity is shot to hell...

The virus was... okay. I viewed it as a Deus Ex Machine which re-set the universe. The Rebellion had painted itself into a corner, ironically with the Hard Times book you used as an avatar. It showed that nobody was going to win the war and things were just deteriorating for everyone.

Meh. Not exactly apples and oranges, but perhaps oranges and lemons - two different flavours of citrus.
WH40K is epic space fantasy.
Traveller is has harder science and is more space opera than anything else.
And while Traveller has largely been pining for the fjords since GDW went under in the mid 90s, that still gave it almost 20 years of development and history behind it. WH40K hasn't been around nearly as long, and still hasn't equalled the years of creative output and development that Traveller had.
Bah, WH40K'a only been around since 1987, and while Traveller may be crunchier, the sheer brutal and unmitigated horror of the WH40K universe trumps it.
It's like playing in the middle of the cut scenes of Event Horizon. :P
I kinda of found 40k silly rather then dark. It really feels like something aimed at 15 year old boys. I guess if you are into overwrought purple prose drama, it's okay. Some of the models are good though.

You should try reading the over-wrought shite that is this Traveller: 1248 scenario. Emperor Lucan gets downloaded into a computer forming the Black Imperium. The K'kree (by the way my favourite race) go on an intergalactic jihad to exterminate meat-eaters. Capital gets conquered and re-conquered about six or seven times within 20 years. Emperor Strephon's son returns from the galactic beyond to form the Fourth Imperium.
And yes - it was oficially licensed.
Yet I can't stop reading. :shame:

Eh, just my feeling. Stuff I liked when I was 15 (or what ever age) I don't necessarily like now. I still like RPGs, but a setting where everyone has a skull motif like it's Halloween doesn't have the same impact as it once did.

I'm telling Him on Terra.
40k is so dark as to be almost ridiculous. Out of all the peoples of the universe, only the Eldar aren't morally abhorrent. The Tau and the Empire are space Nazis, the Tyrannids are evil from beyond space, the Orks are murderous barbarians, everyone related to Chaos is actively engaged in the gleeful commission of attrocities and the Necrons went from being tragic ancient monsters deceived by evil gods to being retarded mummies in space.
You can't really compare it to Traveller though, as Traveller occasionally has events and a narrative, like the Rebellion. In 40k, nothing changes and the whole universe is just a prop to sell models and fight battles with miniatures. Totally different animals.
As for the Virus, I felt that it was Traveller changing with the times. The older school sci-fi of adventuring within a great space empire doesn't really fit with a lot of people these days who don't have experience with stuff from the 60s and 70s.

I can see where people pooh-pooh the WH40K setting as adolescent horror porn, but the fact that there is absolutely no redeeming qualities in human existence is exactly what makes it so compelling. It's the ultimate Hobbesian universe, with a splash of the most insane medievalism.
Technology misunderstood to the point that it's treated as religious relic, ships so ancient they require thousands of poor souls to run them, the depravity of the human existence is matched only by the horrors of the universe it faces, where FTL travel runs the risk of tearing open the Warp and the unconscionable evils within it.
It ain't for your average Lawful Good Paladin, I'll say that.

Harn, the best system that nobody played.
Yeah. That one had a really neat system, but god you are going to need the whole table covered in charts.

Earlier this year I bought me some Space:1889 and HârnMaster. Didn't play them back in the day but whatever.

Naw, I think you are confusing that with Rolemaster.
Harn had a very straight forward system. It was the world that was detailed.
Maybe I am.
Played some Call of Cthulhu for the first time in years. :)
I cast Necro thread!
Anyways, I got the 3145 book for Battletech, and damn, the munchkin factions get hammered. Davion and Steiner fanboys won't like it.
I laughed.
Thinking about picking up the Numenera book later this month...but really I should be getting a Thomas the Tank Engine RPG if it is something I actually want to play

Hang in there... some day our boys will be old enough to play RPGs...
Thanks to the pending release of Werewolf : The Apocalypse, 20th Anniversary Edition, some friends and I have been playing in a consistent, bi-weekly campaign for the last several months. Lots of fun to be had within that environment.

I now feel old.
Whoa,goths! Beat them up!
You guys know they published a 5th edition of the Traveller rules, right? It's about the size of a law school text book.

Vampire has really not aged well. I like the fiction, but loathe the idea of actually playing it.

I still giggle at the art with the vampire chick with the strap on.
Goddamn you, Leif Jones.

*quick google*
IS it for sale, or only available via the kickstarter?

One day when I retire I will purchase Traveller 10 and the 120 volumes of rule books and supplements for Rolemaster. Then I will unhook the internet so people will be motivated to play them with me.

It'll be interesting when the first cohorts of rpg players retire and some of the take up their old hobby; I wonder how it will change the industy (if it does).
I'm playing a Pathfinder game with some friends. It's fun.
It is Summer, so every few weekends I go to my friend Scott's place (about 3 hours away) and do some RPGing. He is the one who ran the epic 20-year campaign I spoke of a while back.
We play GURPS, and he has recruited a whole new generation (helped in part by his teenage son) of players. It is still a blast at 47.
