Title: What household chores do you do?
Post by: merithyn on July 19, 2012, 01:00:21 PM
The women that I work with and I had the whole emasculation conversation over lunch. One of the women suggested that this is why men avoid housework. (None of their husbands would say no to helping, but they would avoid it if at all possible.)

It seems that the majority of men on here in a committed relationship tend toward being very helpful to their partners, or at least they claim to be. Does this extend to the household chores?

Obviously, the single folks are going to skew the results a bit since they kind of HAVE to do this stuff. I'm still wondering.

EDIT: I omitted childcare because I'm going to assume that all of you dads do a good job of taking care of the tykes. You certainly all seem like great dads on the face of it, so it was kind of a non-starter.

I'll answer for my father when my parents were married. He did all of it.

edit: and he felt emasculated.

Wow. Really? Why did he do all of it?

And his generation was taught to feel emasculated for doing housework. That was, most definitely, women's work. Makes sense that he would. Hopefully, men today don't feel the same way.

Honestly my wife does the laungry, and most of the sweeping / vacuuming.  We share on the dishes and general picking-up.

But you missed a whole bunch.  We share on cooking, but I probably do 2/3rds of it.  I am the one who cleans the bathrooms.  I do the garbage and clean the yard (more traditionally male tasks, but its still work).  I clean the cat litter.

My mother had the career while he stayed at home - so it wast mostly only fair that he did most (we did get a maid at one point that "alleviated" his position.

Having said the above, I don't hate or resist housework because it's emasculating.  I do so partly because I'm lazy and partly because the kids will mess everything up 2 seconds later.  Also partly because it just doesn't feel natural or fulfilling.  I'm not into the nesting thing.  I'd rather spend 5 hours working out in the yard in 90 degree heat than spend 30 minutes doing household chores.

Yeah, I kind of stuck to the every day things. I don't really think of cooking as a chore, either, so that one got past me.

And none of this surprises me with you.

The one good things about my ex being so lazy is that my work load around the house didn't increase when she left, I already did everything.

I do all of it sometimes, but realistically my wife does more of it most of the time. I feel like I ought to do more of it in all fairness.

I do do almost all of the yard work and fixing and so on, though, so I guess it evens out a bit. I do more of the dog-walking too.

I actually like doing yard/outside work.  It's fulfilling.  If I've done a good job on the lawn & it looks nice, I'm proud of it and don't mind the physical effort one bit.  Same goes for fixing things, installing/replacing appliances, light fixtures, etc.  But if I do housework, even if I do a decent job of it, I get no such fulfillment.  I honestly wish I did.

I don't know about natural, but some housework is more enjoyable than others.  I do more of the cooking because I find it satisfying - providing food for the family, being a bit creative with what you cook.  I like doing yardwork because it gets you outside.

But I hate doing laundry - its just so dull and tedious.  My wife says she doesn't mind doing it - find it relaxing.  So to each their own.

I don't mind doing laundry, per se.  And surprisingly I'm better at it than my wife, in terms of knowing how to separate clothes & whatnot.  But I abhor folding clothes and am pretty lousy at it.  I'm not much into cooking outside of grilling or making chili, but thankfully the wife loves to cook.

What gets me about dividing up chores is that the wife always bitches about how she has to do more than 50% of them and doesn't count yardwork because she knows that's something I like doing.  She also doesn't count gathering up & taking out the garbage because that's "a man's job anyway".

The folding is what drives me crazy.  Washing itself isn't so bad - just separate and put in machine.

If you enjoy grilling and making chili, then you enjoy cooking.  You just need to expand your repertoire.  There's no difference between grilling a steak, and making any other kind of meal.  And besides - all the great chefs are men anyways.  ;)

All of those. But less than she does. I do the majority of the cooking. She mows the lawn. Mostly because it drives my allergies nuts. It's kinda funny watching that little girl trying to wield a big mower.  :P

Mostly I do my laundry and she does hers. She's got too many rules and delicate stuff she has to wash in special ways I never bothered to figure out. I just dump my clothes in there and go. It's either dark, light or white.

Well sure, some jobs are more enjoyable than others, but natural and satisfying? Doesn't compute.

And it doesn't really matter how satisfying it is, it still needs to be done. I mean, if it works out that what you enjoy doing differs enough from what your partner enjoys doing, that's awesome. But what would happen if neither of you liked doing laundry?

In our house, NO ONE likes doing dishes. It's almost pathological for the kids, and I'm not far behind them. Nonetheless, it needs to be done daily, usually several times a day. (We don't have a working dishwasher, so they have to be done by hand.) Ultimately, either Max or I end up doing them just to get the damn things out of the way, but it really is a major chore even if it only takes 20 minutes to wash up the dinner dishes because we dislike them so much. I don't find it satisfying to do them - I despise them - but I still do them at least as often as Max, because I know that he hates them, too.

So the idea that daily chores are "unsatisfying" as an excuse not to do them is.. alien to me.

I used to sort of like cooking, but the wife sapped all that out of me.  Before I met her, every woman I ever cooked for always appreciated the effort even if I wasn't that skilled and took some shortcuts.  Found out pretty quickly with her that if I'm not going to make everything from scratch and get it right the first time, I may as well not even bother

Outside of grilling, the only thing she lets me do is cut onions for her since they bother her eyes but have zero effect on me.

It just seems absurd to not split it if both of you are working full time.

My wife is a stay at home mom, so she does the bulk of the housework, I do most of the outside stuff.

Exception to this is dishes. She does the cooking, so I do the dishes. I don't really mind doing dishes, and I have kind of a pathological disgust with dirty dishes piled in the sink, s that works out.

This started back when we were both working - whoever cooked, the other one cleaned up. Since she stopped working, and now does almost all the cooking, I do all the dishes, mostly. If I cook (maybe once a week), then somehow I still do the dishes. Not sure how that works out.

My manhood is not tied up in housework though, so the idea that this could be emasculating is kind of weird.

I did get some grief at the in-laws though - I started doing the dishes after Thanksgiving dinner once, and both sister in laws were all "Wow, thanks! That sure is nice of you to help out" with pointed glares at their husbands. Both brother in laws were immediately all "Yeah, he is just showing off! I bet he never touches a dish at home!". They were a bit annoyed when the wife cooly said "Nope, he does almost all the dishes at home, actually. Why don't you guys help out?".

At least all those fights for leading the pride provide lots of entertainment.

If you enjoy grilling and making chili, then you enjoy cooking.  You just need to expand your repertoire.  There's no difference between grilling a steak, and making any other kind of meal.  And besides - all the great chefs are men anyways.  ;)

Well that's understandable.  I've learned that if someone is willing to do a household task, never ever criticize how they do it.  Either go and do it yourself, or shut up and be thankful.

Damn straight.  If it is super important something be done just the way you like it, you better be willing to do it all the time.

You know, there's a limit to that. If I pull a glass out of the cupboard and it has crap in it, yeah, I'm going to say something. Or if your idea of "folding" laundry is to ball it up and shove into a corner in the closet, that's a problem. Cleaning the toilet involves making sure the OUTSIDE is as clean as the INSIDE.

I grew up in a household where everything was criticized, even our coloring pages. Because of that, I try so very hard not to be too critical. That being said, half-assing a chore and expecting to be praised for it will get you thumped in my house. Don't bother if you're not going to seriously make an effort.

Well I think that advice is for adults, not children, but I stand by it.  If you don't like the clothes being balled up and shoved in a corner, but your partner thinks thats just fine, well perhaps you had better be doing the laundry.

To a degree.  If an adult is being lazy or half-assing it to get out of doing stuff there is going to be a bigger problem than whether the clothes are folded properly.

Sure, that's fair.

Because I have a modicum standard of cleanliness, I should do it all, even though I'm the one that goes to work while everyone else is home all day. I'm not saying that every fold in my underwear has to be just right; I'm saying to do the chore at a reasonable level of competence.

I think I understand. It's all the minutiae. There's always something missed. If there's a methodical way of cleaning a house I've never encountered it.

You're free to have a frank discussion with your partner if you think they're not pulling their weight.  But your partner is an adult, and has to live in the same house you do.  So if you mutually decide that your partner is going to do the dishes, and you don't like how he just lets them pile up until the end of day before doing them... well I suggest you re-consider your division of labour, or you learn to accept how he does them.

Sorry. That's what I meant by "calling him on it". I do NOT nitpick on the chore front, and in fact, often check in to make sure I'm not too nitpicky about anything with the family. As I said, I was raised with a mother who was (and is) ridiculous about this, and I'm incredibly sensitive to the fact that I do NOT want to be like her.

So yes, you are absolutely correct, so long as both people are being adult about it.

Y'all use a service or hire independent housekeepers? I use a service so I don't get stuck with the one from Family Guy.

I've known her for years, she used to be a waitress around the corner at the Don Pablo's I used to hang out at, and she'd do places part time;  she used to do it on her own until she got enough clients to do quit tables.  It's her, her cousin and her sister-in-law;  she doesn't use people outside the family.

Very sweet girl;  does more than those other services do, for cheaper.  Does the laundry, dishes, switches out my bedsheets. She even takes care of my cat and my mail when I'm out of town.  She's a good girl.

OH MEESTER JAUN JOO NEED TO QUIT SMOKING EES SO BAD FOR JOO

I do cooking, laundry, vacuuming, pretty much all the yardwork (I do pay a guy to mow), and typical handyman stuff.  Princesca does the dishes, pays all the bills, and takes care of the groceries (orders them and picks them up).

I enjoy cutting the grass. On my mower, I AM MASTER OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

Buying a ZTR is on my to-do list.  I just need to figure out if I can fit it in the garage (which means getting rid of or rearranging a ton of shit) or, failing that, I'll need to build a shed.

Home Depot has good ones for ~3K and they'll even send the monkeys out to build it. Just double check their work.

Yeah I know.  I was originally going to get a lawn tractor but my dad kept telling me "LOL no U can get a ZTR for the same price!!!!!!!!!11111111"  For some reason I was thinking ZTRs started in like the $6K range. :hmm:

I do all of the chores listed, plus cooking and lawn/garden work. I own my own home, and it's just me.  :)

While we're talking about long-departed members, whatever happened to Monkeybutt?  And Camper?  And Pirate Scum?

The last two were really interesting guys.

I'm just glad that Eddie Teach guy's gone.

I do it all. My dad does it all. He and my mum did it all together when she was alive. Every Saturday morning the house was cleaned top to bottoms and the laundry done (down the road at the laundrette). My main chores at home were dusting, watering the plants and ironing.

When I was married we had a Polish cleaner.

My least favourite chore and one that would lend itself better to the stronger sex is vacuuming. Why isn't that on the list? Because the UK is the only nation filthy enough to have wall-to-wall fabric on the floor?

Bathroom cleaning isn't up there either, which is one of the ickiest but my favourite for effort to reward ratio.

Edit: Actually laundry is my favourite. Virtually no effort (sort, put in washer, leave, hang up to dry) and your clothes are clean and your house smells nice.

When I shared a flat I always volunteered for bathroom cleaning, as everybody wanted to avoid it. Unless the people living there are complete pigs it shouldn't be too icky, and bathrooms are not that big. Now, kitchen cleaning...

I did the same.

Sorry. We've had hardwood floors for the last 10 years. I don't remember the last time I ran a vacuum/hoover.

I live in a house with three teenage boys. *shudder* I avoid thinking of the bathroom at all costs.

I don't mind it when it's summer and just Max and me, but when the boys are home it's... not a fun job. Plus, while I don't mind scrubbing the tub/shower, it is a good bit of work, so I kind of assumed that it would be a shared job. Didn't occur to me that it wouldn't be.  :(

Late to the party.

Needs a, "thats maid's work option"

Also, needs a cooking option.

Cooking, dishes and picking up is done by all.  Laundry goes to the boys and Mrs. CC.  I iron my shirts if that counts.

Dusting and other basics like cleaning, bathrooms, washing floors, vacuuming etc.  Thats maid's work.
